Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) -- Rick Santorum started the new year riding the wave of a strong finish in the last major poll before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses and looked to rally his supporters in a series of events on Sunday.
There were few surprises in Saturday night's Des Moines Register poll -- front-runners Mitt Romney and Ron Paul finished 1-2 as they had in other polls during the week. But the Register poll showed Santorum, who just weeks ago had registered only in single digits, pulling ahead of rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry.

He voted “Present” a lot.
I like Santorum!
But whoever wins South Carolina for us and carries Willard’s severed head on a stake into Florida is MY candidate.
I STILL think that’s Newt. But I’m open to any conservative as always.
“Do I have to spell out what Newts response would be?”
First lady of the United states!
Well said. I couldn’t have said it better.
You know what else is too bad? Both parties decided that nominating a *senator* was a good idea.
And now both parties are paying dearly for this choice and likely a couple generations ahead.
It’a an automatic disqualification for many people.
Let’s face it, Santorum is no Lincoln. :)
The perfect man isn’t out there. It was a mistake and it is relevent to any assessment of Santorum the man.
But, like I said if the worst that can be said of Santorum is endorsing the wrong man, then that speaks volumes.
I prefer Cain, simply because he was the outsider, who had business experience and has never held public office. Because I believe very strongly that we need to get someone in there who isn’t part of the whole establishment mentality.
A struggling business doesn’t promote someone from inside, they bring in folks from outside to get things straightened, someone who doesn’t have the connections. Cain was that man.
Santorum, I have no qualms with him or his positions on the issues.
I like Hank Williams, Jr.
“Mr. Lincoln”
Mr. Lincoln I wish you were here
The Republics changed alot in a hundred years
I don’t think its working like you planned
Mr Lincoln we sure could use a hand
Senators make lousy Presidents (look at the current schlub). I want a Governor in the White House. Rick Perry.
"Did you know I am a military hero?" he said. "I fought, bled and came away" after "charges upon the wild onions" and "a good many bloody struggles with the Musquetoes."
Agreed...Santorum is the best choice we have, and indeed a very good choice, IMHO the only valid conservative choice we have, no one conservative has it all and his closet is full of good conservative stuff. I don’t know if he has a secret closet, if so, hopefully it is very shallow, but he has more than enough of a conservative record to set the right course.
Do I have to spell out what Newts response would be?
First lady of the United States!
It’s kind of creepy. We have to picture her under his Speaker’s desk in the Capitol, every time we see her as First Lady. That is just gross. She was happy screwing around with another woman’s husband for years. We know the kind of sex newt told everyone he said “wasn’t cheating.”. Ugh, who wants to think of that?! Plus her hair is so solid it looks like it would hurt you.
Well, hopefully we get our act together by Iowa and get behind the right conservative. I suspect that even if the vote is divided, whomever is first will get the rest from there on.
Cain was derailed by giving money to a woman without the knowledge of his wife. Nothing more
Perry and Bachman are sometimes a little gaffe prone while Santorum states his positions clearly and it literally scares the bejeesus out of the Left.
So I'm for Santorum even though I will vote for anybody but Obama come November.
A great quote! I got googling around to learn more about it and stumbled across this...

Good read! :)
Since ACU ratings mean so much to you (and you repost Newt's "100% conservative" rating when he was Speaker on every thread, conveniently leaving the out the part about how the House Speaker almost never votes on bills)), I take it you would endorse Lindsey Graham for President? He certainly has the best ACU rating of the bunch.
Herman Cain was derailed by Herman Cain. Thank goodness all of those bimbos crawled out of the woodwork when they did. Seriously, if Axelrod had anything to do with that mess, why didn’t he wait until Cain was the nominee and surprise us all in October with the allegations?
