Question For Iowans -- What Was Santorum's Position On Ethanol During The Caucus?
moi | 1-5-11

Can anyone in Iowa tell me what Santorum said about bringing back ethanol subsides/saving mandates?

If he campaigned on doing that, I'm going back to Perry.

It's still ABR in the primary.

I was wondering what you suggest the U.S. use as an oxygenate in our gasoline, since MTBEs were outlawed due to the fact that they are a proven carcinagen.

Search engines are your friends:

From last June:

Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Penn.), who officially announced his candidacy for the presidency on Monday, wants to first phase out ethanol subsidies and then have the government provide incentives for flex-fueling stations.

My view is that in the big picture, ethanol is not that important of an issue. Let's get a good leader with the right values elected, then educate him if necessary.

Rick Santorum looks very good to me, CERTAINLY as the only viable alternative to Newt McRomney.

Rick Perry had his chance...he is toast for this cycle. I wish he'd drop out.

The US is currently mandating far more ethanol in our fuel then just the oxygenate requirements for those small areas requiring Reformulated Gasoline due to smog.

Search engines are your friends:

FreeRepublic is a better one as it appears Santorum did cozy up to the ethanolfare recipients & that might be the reason he clobbered Perry in Iowa.

Santorum will remain my second choice

If something is necessary neither mandate or subsidy is required.

“what you suggest the U.S. use as an oxygenate in our gasoline”

Same thing we used prior to 1992, nothing.

my question was about what should the alternative oxygenate be, if ethanol isn’t used.

Ethanol is fine as the oxygenate. It is the millions of gallons above that minimal requirement that is the real problem.

I distinctly remember Santorum saying that ethanol subsidies need to be eliminated. The funding would be cut every year for four years down to zero. This was probably in early November.

It’s my understanding (correct me if I’m wrong) that MTBEs were used exculsively prior to ‘92,, at which time the Feds began phasing them out, after large amounts of MTBE residue were found in California’s drinking water. Later MTBEs were found to be carcinagenic, and were outlawed.

So going back to what was used in 1992 doesn’t appear to be realistic to me.

What am I missing?

oxygenate is crap from the EPA.
Corn is for making whiskey, not fuel for cars. (and tortillas for the Julio’s)
Do away with the stupid EPA and associated regulations, and the problem is solved.

You are far more optimistic than I am!

I would love to do away with the EPA, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

Let's get a good leader with the right values elected, then educate him if necessary.

One of the "right values" is that taxpayer money not be spent on private energy markets to suit a politician's whims. Anyone who requires educating on that principle will not be my preferred choice for president.

Where is spending taxpayer money acceptable to you? Gardasil?

The system requires a lot of reform. We’re not going to get that with 0 in office. Santorum is offering $5 trillion in cuts over five years. That seems a good starting point.

Well what ever it was Perry is the only candidate that the Ethanol lobby campaigned against. They passed out a flyer at caucus places naming only Perry.
