Santorum: Trim Social Security now even if painful

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.

"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.

Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

“So you’d steal from old folks AND call them names...

Again, it is not my responsibility to take care of the “old folks” and believe that it would have been better for them to save and wisely invest their earnings during their working years.

The seniors need to be self reliant and stop begging at the alter of FDR & LBJ.

Doesn’t matter, they didn’t get a high rate of return so they get to steal from their grandkids instead of working an extra year. True conservatives all.

Most of the people who have thought seriously about this issue, ie Paul Ryan and Rick Perry want to protect benefits for people already on it or within 8 to 10 years of retirement.

That’s only fair.

Cutting benefits would hurt older people. There is not a means test for social security, nor should there be, but for a lot of people it’s their main income.

There were no cost of living increases for 3 years until this year while everything such as gas and groceries went way up.

This is a very ill-thought out stance by Rick Santorum, but if that’s what he believes, I’m glad he told us before we voted for him.

You missed the point, Virginia...It is about control...that money in my control vs the Govt’s control...the @$$hole$ in the govt couldn’t claw their way out of a wet paper bag...and maybe you would have a problem too, if you are defending the entitlement concept of Soc Sec.

We know it. We’re just playing with the more ultra-partisan supporters, watching them make fools of themselves.

Social Security is not an Entitlement...as long as you think so, you are part of the problem.

I don't agree. As far as your explanation of why Medicare is so expensive......a bit simplistic, IMHO. We treat our senior citizens well. We give them good care on the average. We value life, so spend extraordinary amounts on end of life procedures...and we pay mightily through Medicare. It's just the way it is.

I'm realistic about where things are at this point in time.

A little side note - It would be nice if more FReepers would try to have discussions in a civil manner that doesn't resort to personal attacks or accusations. When you attack or accuse an individual, you are not dealing with the issue at hand, just merely trying to put the other person on the defensive.

You actually believe a well documented liar from the AP and Dem party operative named Charley Babington .

The truth will come out. I do not automatically believe everything I read but if (big "if") the reporting is accurate, Santorum is toast.

“He truly means it, he intends to raise the retirement age by a year or so and reduce benefits for those who have high incomes. Should we hang the capitalist bastard tomorrow or Sunday?”

Ricky. Santorum. Must. Die.

It’s doesn’t matter that it’s lie/ hit piece
pushed by a well documented AP Obama and
Clinton troll peddling lies for the Dems .
Its all about spreading a lie until it becomes well known
Fact .
Goebbels said it first - tell a lie long enough it becomes the truth
Thats Chuck ‘s agenda at the AP.
Yes Newt took huge hits from the same
AP frauds and liars .
Chucky knows his lies have no consequences !

The two other candidates (Gingrich and Perry) are going down fast as well. Santorum was our best hope. How he could make such an idiotic comment that self-destructs is beyond me.

Amen, brother.

I hate to see the hostility here for seniors by a few people.

Things were a lot different during working years for seniors.

My children, for example, learned early on in their working lives to invest in IRA’s and try to provide for their own retirement.

We’d never heard of IRA’s. The best we could do was live frugally and try to get our houses paid off.

We were taught that we would have social security and we need it.
