Non-citizen Voting in Connecticut

The Mayor of New Haven, Connecticut, John DeStefano, a Democrat, wants to let non-citizens vote in city elections. One might ask the good mayor if he also thinks it OK for non-citizens to run for city offices, too -- like for mayor. According to a news story in New Haven Register, Pat O'Neill, spokesman for the state GOP House Republicans, asked when told of DeStefano's proposal: "When are they going to extend voting rights to the dead?"

One inconvenient little snag for Mr. DeStefano's expansion of the franchise is the Constitution of the State of Connecticut, which stipulates in Article 6, Section 1 that voters must be U.S. citizens. One might think that in requiring citizenship to vote, Connecticut's Constitution is merely reaffirming the U.S. Constitution. But there is no such requirement in the original Constitution, nor is there even an instance of the word "citizen" in the Bill of Rights. Indeed, in all of the U.S. Constitution (including the other amendments), it is not explicitly stated that to vote in America, one must be a citizen.

The U.S. Constitution leaves eligibility requirements for voting to the states.

My family founded New Haven in 1635. Perhaps they should have gone someplace else. I’m glad they got out of there during the 1700’s.

The only reason why this excuse for a mayor wants to allow non-citizens to vote is to improve the Democrats' election chances, including those of himself and his buddies. It's that simple.

More than 90% of all voting fraud schemes over the last century have been perpetrated by Democrats.

They try to justify this in their minds with the idea that they are “good” and all their opponents are “bad”. Therefore, any illegal, unethical attempt to stay in power is the “right thing to do” in their eyes.

From what I’ve read in the New Haven Independent the mayor is saying non citizens will be required to show ID before being allowed to vote. So they must show ID to vote in local elections, but not in our Federal elections. Does anyone see a hint of hypocrisy here?

Actually there might not be any hypocrisy in that proposal. What exactly do they mean by "show ID"?

IIRC New Haven has been issuing city resident IDs to illegals as part of their quest to legitimize immigration law violators in that city. So, if accepting a worthless, city-issued ID is what they have in mind, then it is just another step forward in the grand march towards their ultimate Communist agenda.

Never fear... the LIBERALS (and the MORONIC GOVERNOR MALLONY) will create a new constitution... (NUTMEGGERS, we better hide the CONSTITUTION we have in another OAK TREE, so the MALLONY and the DEMOMARXISTS in Hartford won't tear it up).

The amount of virtue in your country (or state) is proportional to the integrity of those you elect.

If you tolerate the corruption, then it IS what you want.

This is nonsense. I can't believe The American Thinker published this.

Maybe Mr. Hall should stick to computers.

Who does Mr. Hall think "We the People of the United States" is referring to?

Are non-citizens considered "the People of the United States" or are they simply our guests?
