OKLAHOMA CITY - Guns, smoking and texting while driving are among issues that lawmakers are expected to revisit when they return to the state Capitol on Feb. 6.

Thursday is the deadline in both chambers for lawmakers to file bills for consideration in the upcoming session.

Sen. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma City, has filed Senate Bill 1092, which would allow those who meet certain requirements to openly carry a weapon.

Russell also has a measure that would allow hunters to use suppressors to reduce the sound of their weapons. The measure has yet to be assigned a bill number, according to Senate staff.

“Russell also has a measure that would allow hunters to use suppressors to reduce the sound of their weapons.”

For those of you in Rio Linda, that would be ‘silencers’..

Silencers and suppressors are two entirely different mechanisms. But folks in Rio Linda wouldn't understand the concept anyway so I'll leave it at that.

Does the federal government collect a fee from gun owners who own a noise suppressor (silencer)?

"Does the federal government collect a fee from gun owners who own a noise suppressor (silencer)?"

Only if they look like this...

“Suppressor” is a proper term for devices commonly known as “silencers.” “Silencer” is literally incorrect (they don’t make guns silent, but is accepted as correct. “Silencer” was originally a trademark of the Maxim company.

They are legal in many states (usually not for hunting) but require a $200 transfer tax, plus fingerprints, background check, and a sign-off by your local Sheriff or Police Chief.

This is an excellent move in the right direction. The question isn’t whether silencers should be legal, it’s whether they should be mandatory.

Oh dear! I don’t think so.

The problem with getting laws relaxed on silencers is the hollywierd image of what they are and capable of.

They wont reduce the sound to a whisper and you wont be using one on long range rifles. They only work at subsonic ballistics.

True, unless the round is subsonic which they get pretty quiet, but they do allow you to use a range without ear protection comfortably.

you wont be using one on long range rifles.

Oh yeah, you will. Have used on .338 Lapua

They only work at subsonic ballistics

Not true. They reduce muzzle blast in all cases. Subsonic rounds reduce the sound of the projectile downrange.

Actually, silencers are very useful for supersonic rounds. They won’t affect the “crack” of the shockwave (which is of little harm to the shooter’s ears) but they do a great job on the muzzle blast.

Also, the “crack” depends on the size of the projectile. With a 223 or 17 it’s pretty minimal (an airplane is another matter).

But there is no way they are capable of anything close to hollyweird ‘whisper quiet and super long range’.

That is the image that the general public has of what they are capable of, close to zero sound and shooting an apple at a distance of 3/4 mile away.

While it might be possible with enough elevation, it would be a freak luck event.

I know what they will do, but the general public has a wildly distorted image of what that is.

That was my point. They should be legal, but until the public has real facts that is a tough nut to crack.

The .338 was shooting at 1000m, .62 miles. I wouldn’t have wanted to be the apple. At the target there was just the crack of the bullet. At the firing line a muffled whomp.

Silencers and suppressors are two entirely different mechanisms. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh dear! I don’t think so.

Of course they're different:
Silencers suppress the sound of a shot.
Suppressors silence the sound of a shot.

Obviously based on different sciences /sarc
