Perry’s support helps Gingrich - Endorsement perfectly timed

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Rick Perry’s withdrawal and perfectly timed endorsement of Newt Gingrich on Thursday probably will help the former House speaker pick up a percentage point or two in South Carolina’s Republican primary on Saturday, political analysts predict.

The Perry endorsement, coupled with the news that the final count in Iowa showed Mitt Romney actually lost the Jan. 3 caucuses to Rick Santorum, brightened what could have been a much tougher day on the campaign trail for Mr. Gingrich, who is again facing questions about his personal history of marital infidelity.

But the Texas governor’s carefully chosen words of support seemed to be aimed directly at those religious conservatives who have openly expressed concerns about the thrice-married Mr. Gingrich’s divorces and self-admitted “personal mistakes.”

“The fact is, there is forgiveness for those who seek God and I believe in the power of redemption, for it is a central tenet of my own Christian faith,” Mr. Perry said in an endorsement in which he clearly set out to bestow, as much as is possible, the GOP’s coveted Reagan mantle on Mr. Gingrich, calling him “a conservative visionary who can transform our country.”

Mr. Gingrich had been successful in receiving the forgiveness of many evangelical leaders - and not so successful with others threw their support to Mr. Santorum last weekend after a meeting in Texas.

Republicans of all stripes yesterday tended to agree that the visionary label could credibly apply only to Mr. Gingrich among the four remaining GOP presidential nomination seekers.

My gratitude to Gov. Rick Perry and Mrs. Anita Perry for fighting the good fight for freedom, and for understanding and believing in the exceptionalism that is America.

Perry is a good man!
His day will come.
For now, Texas still needs him.

Hey, Perry talked a good talk and his supporters trolled a good troll. But in the end he couldn’t get the critical mass. The momentum seems to be with the Newtron Bomb and Perry was gracious enough to give it a tip of the hat.

President Gingrich. I never thought I’d hear serious talk about that. If he bests O’bummer this year, the theme for 2016 might be “America is getting rich again with Gingrich.”

Bump!

Here’s hoping and praying that true, small Federal Government Conservativism wins the day.

That Romneyism, Rovism, etc., loses.

Splitting the difference with the Statists will not do, anymore.

Thank you, Governor and Anita Perry.

Continue to fight the good fight.

Speaker Newt...all eyes are on you.

Time to save this country.

Let’s roll.

You did good CW—you were one of the few civil Perry supporters on Free Republic.

Are you going to do like your hubby and return to the farm after doing your best for the Republic?

Oh, and I have always wanted to ask you—do you two have a child called the Cincinatus Kid?

This was inevitable after a poll came out here in Texas on Wednesday, the day before he dropped out of the race, showing that Romney was leading Perry in Texas by double digits. I heard it on the radio on the way to work Wednesday morning on the local news broadcast. And, 39 percent of Texans polled felt that Rick Perry's presidential run put Texas and Texans in a bad light; ie. he embarrassed us greatly. But, a tip of the hat to him for bowing out gracefully and endorsing a guy who has a real shot at defeating Obozo.

You miss the point on the poll...at that point Romney was surging in polls all over the South. That was scary. He was leading Newt. Yes, like you, some people tried to make Perry vs Romney in Texas the point of the poll. Their remarks were snide and ugly.

The only point the poll actually made vis a vis Perry is that people were tired of their Governor running but only getting trashed in return. Trashed by people supposedly on our side of the political divide, and not doing well to boot.

If it makes you feel better to believe that Perry would have gone on to get a low vote total in SC and gone on to FL with dismal results, and would have done so at Newt’s expense EXCEPT for this Texas poll, you go right on ahead and stay in the dark.

The truth is different. Perry dropped out to help the CAUSE, against Romney in SC, and against Obama in the Fall.

He would have known to do that, and he would have done that, with the TX poll or without the TX poll.

The good news is, the scary Romney poll surge across the whole South
appears to be ebbing.

Thank the good Lord.

Southern Republicans cannot be voting for Romney. That simply cannot happen and this country be saved.

“Southern Republicans cannot be voting for Romney. That simply cannot happen and this country be saved.”

It’s not that everyone was voting for Romney. It’s that those who were not for Romney were split.

CW

I was torn between Rick and Newt. I truly believed Perry was the most conservative person in the race, but unfortunately, he just couldn’t gain traction.

His withdrawal and endorsement of Newt made my choice clear, and I thank him for that. I believe it has made a big difference here in SC, and may very well stop Romney. He did a good thing for America.

You personally should be proud of your support of him, and the way you have conducted yourself here over the last few months. You weathered the attacks on your candidate with grace.

Thank you also.

A great Governor. Would make a great President. Just did not make a very good Presidential candidate for some reason. But a great guy who is liked and respected way beyond the folks who supported him in the polls.

His endorsement yesterday was indeed meaningful. No doubt about it.

You’ve been a stable work horse, through all of this, CW....and we love ya. A class act. I’m a Texan by choice having transplanted to one of the worst cities in Texas 15 years ago. It’s still better than a lot of places on earth. We love Texas. Most of our family moved here and we’re originally from the east coast. I’m not over the edge, I just have to think about things and where I fit in to what is happening. Governor Perry is a great man and I’m proud to have supported him. I hurt most because people we trusted, let him down. They let us down. I think any of the remaining candidates will be a hard sell. God bless you, CW.
