An immense blast of plasma spewed late Sunday night from the sun led to the strongest radiation storm bombarding our planet since 2005, and a rare warning from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency -- and even a plan to redirect certain high-flying airplanes.
NOAAs Space Weather Prediction Center -- the nations official source of warnings about space weather and its impact on Earth -- issued a watch for a geomagnetic storm expected to hit our planet Tuesday morning after a satellite witnessed an ultraviolet flash from the massive solar eruption, according to Spaceweather.com.

Polar flights affected.
Me confused.
I thought these charged particles traveled at the speed of light. How could we see an ultraviolet flash 24 hours before the thing hits? Wouldn’t there be no warning at all?
>> There is no risk to people on Earth, Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center told FoxNews.com.
What other kinds of people are there, Doug?
People on the ISS. :) But, yeah, I knew what you meant.
The “flash” (electromagnetic radiation) travels at the speed of light. The (charged) particles are slower. There should be some spectacular auroras in the next day or so.
The actual charged particles are carried by the “solar wind” which moves much slower than the speed of light
There are a few people in space, low Earth orbit and this solar storm is a serious threat to them.

Your post made my day. Can’t stop laughing!
This was another thread about the solar storm, I saw just when I saw this one. It’s not a duplicate post or anything, I just wanted to link to two as an FYI:

:)
The charged particles travel roughly 1000-3000km/sec depending on solar wind strength, as opposed to lightspeed at 300000km/sec
Dang that old George W. Bush! We know he did this!!! /sarcasm
Someone should run that by that congresswoman who thinks we have sent astronauts to Mars and see if she agrees.
Better yet reroute them so they leave at night...
What people? All those barking moonbats and don’t forget
the chinese astronauts on the moon.
You're scouting a 600 ac wheat field at night for a poacher shooting deer on your property.
The poacher spots you in the Moon light from 500 yrds and takes a shot at you. You see the flash of the rifle and hit the ground...0.68 seconds later the crack of the bullet flies over head. 2.5 seconds after the flash you then heard the shot from the rifle.
*You promptly return fire at the fleeing poacher, leading him by two yards.
“A [coronal mass ejection (CME)] hit Earth’s magnetic field on Jan. 24th at approximately 1500 UT (10 am EST),” Kathy Sullivan, deputy administrator of NOAA.
The next mass ejection will occur this evening at ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN newsrooms right after zero’s State of the Union stump speech.
