Why Mitt Romney’s Electability is Not Inevitable
RedState ^ | January 29, 2012 | Ben Howe

After many months of getting a pass, it seems that the other candidates are willing to finally start hitting Governor Mitt Romney on his major weakness: The Massachusetts Health Care Insurance Reform Law. The bill, known by most as Romneycare, is (as we all have been saying for many moons) the basis for the much maligned Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise affectionately known as Obamacare.

I’ve been in endless debates and discussions with Romney supporters and surrogates for some time now as they paint a beautiful picture of the ultimate State’s Rights battle. They claim that Romneycare vs Obamacare isn’t about socialized medicine vs the free market. They say it’s actually the core of the Federalist struggle and that Romney will channel Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and march onto the capital steps, fulfilling the dreams and desires of tea partiers nationwide by finally standing up and saying, “Enough is enough! Let the state’s make their decisions Obama! Your days of tyranny are at an end!” And they all rejoiced.

Yet, continually when Romney is approached on this subject in the debates with fellow Republicans, he seems incapable of defending any other point and seems befuddled at the idea that there might be more than one part about Obamacare that American’s had wholly objected to. For him, it’s all about the mandate.

But it’s important to keep in mind, Mitt Romney does not object to the concept of mandates. Far from it actually.

I would love for Mr. Coulter or Ms. Bondi to explain exactly how it is that Mitt Romney is going to get in front of millions of Americans, the majority of which couldn’t tell you the name of the Speaker of the House, and convince them that this slick, polished banker who for many will represent the very institutions that spent the last few years bankrupting the country, is totally not a hypocrite because after all, the 10th amendment and stuff. Yes he agrees with mandates. Yes he agrees with more bureaucracy around healthcare. Yes he agrees with top down government solutions. But federalism!!!

If Mitt Romeny is the nominee, I will hold my nose, close my eyes and pull the lever for Barack 0bama. Then I will go see a hypnotist to help me block out my mind what I had just done.

Romney is lower than 0bama on all levels. He is a detestable human being. He only uses his Morman faith to make himself seem pious. It’s just a tool to make him look like a Godly man. But Mitt Romney only worships himself and power. He is a liberal through and through.

If I am going to vote for this nations destruction, I will vote for a Democrat to do it, not a “Republican”.

0bama v Romney will be a clear vote on which man you want to drive us over the cliff. I say let 0bama be that man.

In the story there is a stance by Ron Paul that I agree with: Ron Paul’s answer to the question of people who couldn’t afford insurance nor their hospital bill seemed to be something along the lines of “screw them.” By and large, this has been considered a bad answer so conservatives have continually looked for other solutions

I believe the real "mandate" that needs to be repealed is the one that hospitals need to treat anyone regardless of their ability to pay

There is always some type of charity that can help out or payments (no matter how small) that can be made, or assets that can be sold off if one really needs medical attention.

The other part to the problem is the high costs which occur due to a large part by gov't regulation and malpractice insurance rates

If someone really needs a house or apartment, should the bank or landlord give it to them if the person(s) can not pay?

If someone really needs a car to get back and forth to work but can't afford one (even a cheap used one), should the car dealer give that person a car?

Of course not, but medical treatment is a commodity just like anything else. The mandate to make hospitals and doctors work for free (i.e. slavery) to treat anyone who can not pay, or pay needs to be repealed

Yes I'm a mean SOB, but a realist.

Got a project...Ya wanna help? Trying to get this idea to Rush, Sarah, Rick, Florida tea party people etc. One emai will not get the message through.

Since Florida is a winner take all state and
Since Rick Santorum is home with his family,(as he should be) and
SInce the number of people supporting Willard is much less than the combination of Newt+Rick’s total

Can we make the suggestion that in Florida the Santorum backers cast their vote for the conservative that can beat the Moderate candidate, RUSH

We are NOT asking Rick to drop out, just help get a conservative not a moderate elected/stop Romney.

If Sarah/Rick/FR/teaparty others could get this message out (Not Newt it would sound desperate)it would easily put Newt over the top in FL.

First of Newt needs talking points. Romney is the empty suit, blind trust candidate. If Romney’s elected he’ll take care of his friends and let the rest of us fend. If elected he’ll compromise away everything he stands for. Romney can’t be trusted. He uses Obama-like Chicago thug tactics when he campaigns. And so on.

Second Newt needs to be ready for this stuff in a debate. He needs to use Santorum as an attack dog. He needs to fight as the underdog and paint Romney as the bully and the juggernaut and paint himself as the fighter while offering an articulate vision for America.

Sorry, but Romney can’t win in the general election.

That IS inevitable.

You're exactly right! Let Obozo take the rap for what he started.

I think there are a tremendous amount of people who subscribe to the logic of your statement.

I will never, ever...until doomsday...figure out why Ann Coulter has taken the positions she has lately. And, frankly, I don’t care.

She has proven to me during the past year that she is willing to sell her soul for some reason that I can’t imagine. Has she been bought? Has she become a “moderate and progressive”? Who knows?

I just know that I will never see her in the same light, ever again.

Excellent posting, as always, Phil.
