Updated Jan. 31, 2012: Support for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has remained one of the few constants during the Republican nomination race. But as contenders to Mr. Romney have emerged and then faded, the GOP still seems hesitant to embrace him.
The most recent candidate to play the Anyone But Romney role is former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who recently finished first in the partys South Carolina primary.
The National Posts graphics team takes a look at the ups and downs of the race so far.

Once the first ballot, or vote, has occurred, and no candidate has a majority of the delegates’ votes, the convention is then considered brokered; thereafter, the nomination is decided through a process of alternating political horse-trading, and additional re-votes.[1][2][3][4] In this circumstance, all regular delegates (who, previously, were pledged to the candidate who had won their respective state's primary or caucus election) are “released,” and are able to switch their allegiance to a different candidate before the next round of balloting. It is hoped that this ‘freedom’ will result in a re-vote resulting in a clear majority of delegates for one candidate.
Republican Voters will accept Santorum as the alternative, but many of them will never go for Newt.
Yep. That’s the “1%” angle.
Romney CAN’T fight Obama because he’s just like him.
Romney WON’T fight Obama because of the “racist” tag.
Romney = 2012 is McCain 2008.
IOW, a loser.
A CHOSEN by the GOP-E AND dems loser to help BOTH of them once and for all permanently get rid of their PITA (pain-in-the-a$$) Tea Party and “conservatines” who want to “clean house, senate and POTUS”and change Washington.
The GOP-E and dems DON’T and WON’T want THAT to happen.
That’s easy. The leading tea party candidate that the conservative base and evangelicals are coalescing with: NEWT GINGRICH!!
I guess tomorrow will tell us more after today's vote in Florida.
Newt will stay in the race through to the convention. During that time, it’s likley the Romney campaign will lose momentum.
Newt's lounging on a couch with Pelosi is just the tip of the iceberg the left is going to throw at him.
I hope we have our cart hitched to a horse that can pull us across the line. The alternative is over a cliff...
I posted this last night: “Ricks problem is that he is a good man. At this point in our existence, America no longer accepts good men as her leaders. Instead, there are many who are perfectly fine with liars, cheats, swindlers and thieves. We have crossed a different point of the Delaware, and in fact, are sailing straight toward opposing fire.
Look em in the eye and be prepared to defend yourselves.”
Frankly, we’re not going to win against 0bama’s billion unless we have an SOB leading the charge. I am thinking of an SOB-ness that is as ruthless politically as 0bama and his minion demons are. Romney’s money isn’t going to win this at fancy fundraisers and private dinners in Washington’s power restaurants, conducted in round sonorous tones.
Newt’s an SOB. But he’s shrewd. And I’ll bet he knows where to find plenty of skeletons, too.
This election is for many of the remaining US marbles. And, for who controls the next decades. I do not want it to be either the Communist Chinese, the muslims or the 3rd world. We shall not fight this political war with nerf balls and fine Irish linen.
Time is not in Romney’s favor. Time favors the truth, which in this case is with Gingrich.
Just like on this website—trolls are eventually eliminated. A lie cannot live.
Now there is some hope for the future...
Buuuuump!
Look, if you’re going to roll out the leftist/GOP-e talking points, your FR account will get the zot! Don’t be a troll!!
This does not bode well for the outcome.
Before you jump on the Santorum bandwagon there are several issues you should be aware of..
Senators Propose Redundant Media Research Study
(Washington, D.C.) - Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) today criticized Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), and Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) for reintroducing the Children and Media Research Advancement Act (CAMRA), which will set up a $90 million program to research what countless other studies have already documented the effects of television viewing and other media on children. CAGW named Sen. Lieberman Porker of the Month when he introduced the same legislation in August, 2004.
This proposal is just one expensive rerun, CAGW President Tom Schatz said. For decades this issue has been studied to death, always yielding the same results. Calling for yet another taxpayer-funded study belittles the ability of parents to use common sense in deciding what shows are appropriate for their children.
1. Santorum joined Sen Hillary Clinton, Sen Lieberman, Sam Brownback in introducing the CHILDREN AND MEDIA REASEARCH ADVANCEMENT ACT which allocated a 90 MILLION dollar program to research the effects that watching tv has on children. This was a call for ANOTHER taxpayer funded study the thinks the govt knows better than parents on what is appropriate for their children to view.

2. Santorum voted to raise the minimum wage and to have the govt be allowed to set wage regulations.
3. Santorum spent more than 1 billion on earmarks including..., Pennsylvania in 2005 received $483 million in earmarks for 872 projects, including $5.4 million for an igloo upgrade for an Army Depot and $5 million for a new visitor center at Gettysburg.

4. Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling 8 times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please tell me it’s so. I want to belieeeeve!
How?
Money
Is he the most conservative person left on the GOP ticket? Yes. Because of that fact, is he who we should be supporting for the GOP nod? Yes. Is he what our Country needs when we need it most? I doubt it, but he's a damn sight better than either Zero or Willard.
I've been here 13 years. Saying the same damn things every election about the same types of lame assed RINO's. Starting with Bush/McCain. Turns out, I was right about McCain too. If that makes me a troll, so be it. I'm a conservative. If they don't live up to my standards, tough.
Would it suprise you that the “race card” is pretty much worn out its use?
You need to stop now if you don’t want to be banned.
After reading your comments, and I have been jumping back and forth between Newt and Rick, I have decided to go with Newt because he CAN take the FIGHT to Obama.
