AG accepts Texas redistricting deal
Associated Press ^ | Feb. 6, 2012 | Paul J. Webber

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Texas' attorney general agreed Monday to temporary voting maps that add new Hispanic-dominated districts and could save the April 3 date for primary elections statewide. But at least one influential minority group said it would fight the new plan.

Still, the proposal marks a rare moment of agreement in a bitter legal clash that has dragged on since last summer, even reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. Minority groups filed a lawsuit alleging the GOP-controlled Legislature drafted redistricting maps that were discriminatory and ignored a burgeoning Hispanic population.

A San Antonio federal court had given the state and minority groups until Monday to reach a compromise, or see the Texas primaries pushed back for a second time.

Under the new plan, Hispanics would control half of Texas' four new congressional seats that were awarded following new population numbers from the census. Attorney General Greg Abbott said seven minority groups agreed to the new plan, which he said minimizes changes to the original redistricting maps drafted by the Legislature.

"Today's maps should allow the court to finalize the interim redistricting maps in time to have elections in April," Abbott said in a statement.

and could save the April 3 date for primary elections statewide.

Does this mean it's back to Winner-take-all?

BTW, it's 38 EC votes.

:-)

You’re so right about GWB being an accomplice to all of this.

My guess is that temporary = “2012 only.”

If the GOP fares well under the maps they might not want to go through the process of redrawing the lines again and getting them approved.

Well that’s what I get for relying on the wiki. Shame on me. (*looks at ground, kicks dirt with toe of boot.*)

The entire race based districting premise of the Left is unconstitutional. There is no constitutional right to elect someone of your own race to represent you. That this is tolerated in the 21st century is an abomination.

Bingo and what we get for electing “conservatives” like Nixon, Bush I & II and...

Another horrible move by political geniuses like Rove.

I’m not upset with the AG. He’s a heck of a fighter and I’m proud of him.

It’s the Texas primary date that offends me. In case I haven’t already told every FReeper who will listen, I voted for Hillary Clinton in 2008 (Operation Chaos) because McCain had it locked up. Many in my district did. That’s a sad state of affairs in The Great State of Texas.

Mexico will soon have Texas back in their fold. They have populated it now. Same as the Muzzies talking over England, the illegals are taking over Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Georgia.

Yep. A minority gets half of the new seats, but that's not enough. It should be zero new seats for the groups. Texans get the seats, not hispanics or whites or whomeever.

Quite right on the DC control of the formerly DemoCrap controlled southern states.

I lived in Baton Rouge for several years (just in time for Katrina and Rita). I drove past the busing depot every morning going to work. Some of these kids (mostly black) spent 4 hours a day in transit on a bus - maybe more when all the downtime is aggregated. How did that help the education of these kids? Well of course it didn't and it prevented their parent(s) from participating in their child’s school and the kids didn't go to the same school as their neighbors.

A federal judge presided over this travesty for 50 years and it was resolved swiftly after his retirement. Pure evil if you as me.

The racist Left is upset enough about this deal to make me comfortable with it.

Guess I’ll call the county and see when I need to get my crew together for the election...

Needless to say I am not impressed with any of this...

The democrats are getting their digs in for 2000 when DeLay helped redistrict Texas...We are paying for that with our future...

Texas democrats “used” to put Texas first...Now they are just state level federal lapdog cowards...

We shall see how this goes...I would not be surprised that when I make that call, no one will have an answer for me...

So they’ve set a date for the primary? Thought I heard the judge wouldn’t accept the deal?

I called the Harris County Clerks office and got chirping crickets sound effects...

No one is sure what is going to happen...And who does that work out best for??? (rhetorical question, hehehe)

The longer they can keep Texas out of the spotlight, and on our heels, the better for Romney, and Obama...

It’ll be a win-win for them, and what amazes me the most is no one seems to give a damn about this nonsense...

Sure they got the usual feckless wonders arguing and declaring all sorts of BS to keep the re-districting issue in the courts...Greg Abbott has done what he can to move this along, and no one else seems to be backing his play...

This is really the key problem we have now...

Santorum was lucky to get into Texas yesterday and drum up some fundage to operate in the next few contests this next month...

I have a feeling he is going to do very well in Texas, if we can every get our act together...

It’s embarrasing, and not a lot of people, other than myself (I know of only two other people across the entire state, one of them is another FReeper) seem to be raising hell about this nonsense...

Who do you call??? Glad y’all asked...

Call the Texas Secretary of State office, Give a thank you call to Greg Abbott’s office for his attempts at getting this resolved...We are still looking to see results, but I am not going to throw rock at him, because at least he is making this a fight...

Give your local State Rep and Senators office a call, light a fire under their arses for lolligagging around and some not going ahead and filing for the primary...That to me is intellectual and political laziness in my book...

Call your local GOP county office and pour some gasoline on their behinds and light them up...

Bout time Texas finishes fartin’ around and straighten this process up...

Otherwise, this as well will give Obama a clear shot at another 4 years...We need to not allow his re-election to be classified (credibly) as a mandate...

We do (allow) that, and it was nice knowing y’all...

Just my opinion...And what do I know, right???

Where in the constitution does it say blacks will have a representative, Hispanics will have a representative, Chinese, muslims, etc will have a representative?

How long before districts are drawn so the Crips and the

Bloods can have their own representative?

FoxNews this afternoon announce Texas would not be having a Primary...I thought that was kinda abrupt, but the same “Bat-Channel” the local newsies announced a deal would be proposed to secure April 17th, 2012 for the Texas Primary...

BREAKING NEWS...

Was just talking to the elections coordinator here in Harris County, and she said if the 17th doesn’t pass muster with the democrats, the 24th is IT...

If that falls through, we cannot do a Primary in May, because of other election committments for school boards and other local referendums...So May is out completely...

If this gets pushed to June, we will interfere with the convention process from the Precincts to the Senatorial District conventions and then the State convention needs to be coordinated...Not enough time...

Plus the spin is that the RonPaul-bots will be better organized and bloodied from 2008 and ready to go to get their digs in the convention process right all the way up to the National convention later this year...

There is a concerted effort to dumb down Texas’s process, and we had better be on our toes ready for a multiple pronged attack...Both from the dems and the fringe elements within the Republican party...

The battle is on, and we are already behind the 8 ball folks...

A website to stay on top of some of this is:

txredistricting.org

I haven’t been there yet, but that was just relayed to me just now...

Good luck to us all...We are going to need all hands on deck for this one...

Y’all have to keep in mind that not all Latinos are liberal Dimocrats - and few are as liberal as lily-white Lloyd Doggett or departed but un-lamented Martin Frost (not dead, just voted out...).

It’s up to us to see to it that those of Mexican descent realize that their values of religion, family, and hard work are Republican values - and most assuredly NOT Dimocrat values.
