WASHINGTON (AP) - Hold the mystery meat: Military bases will soon be serving more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dishes under the first program in 20 years to improve nutrition standards across the armed services.
First lady Michelle Obama and Pentagon officials planned to announce the effort Thursday during a visit to Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, where the military has been experimenting with the idea through a pilot program designed to improve the quality and variety of foods served on base.
It's not just about giving members of the armed services a more svelte profile.

Johnny: Totally agree. If they don’t have enough of each nutrient - with lots of calories - they’ll start burning their muscle mass.
Tigerized: Ping!
I think she’s aiming for the NorK model. Sticks, rocks and dirt.
FUMO
When I was a young man going through Airborne training, I was eating a big portion of SOS in the morning with 4-5 glasses of chocolate milk, four 1/4 cheese burgers for lunch along with desert and a huge dinner, and never gained a pound. Probably put down 10,000 calories a day and worked it all off. On weekends, I played basketball for 3-4 hours a day.
Barry and Michelle are really pro-fruit where the military is concerned.
3,600 cals per day for paratroopers in moderate climes.
In Alaska, 4,800 + 6 large chocolate bars.
And if you don’t eat all of it, you will freeze to death.
(The only time we actually got three C-rats a day was in AK - then we got four, plus the chocolate. Thaw out the food, eat, thaw out some more, eat, ...)
I feel like I woke up in North Korea, let’s face it, Moochelle will have our troops on the same diet. B-P I wish that fat cow would leave us alone and work on her own fat butt.
that brings back memories.....chipped beef on toast....yum...I loved it as a kid.
Oh the beckoning of simpler times...
SOS is what we called it and I loved it too :)
Would/could ANYONE tell me what her nutritional background is? I was of the understanding that she trained as a lawyer, and had the choice of giving her licence up or having it rescinded.
What on this beautiful earth qualifies her as a foods/nutritional expert?

.... on Monday the Pentagon official was talking about this trip to LRAFB in a meeting. I interjected “Little Rock AFB is my old stompin’ grounds — I can give you a recommendation for a great barbeque joint.”
Here’ what I intended: http://www.corkysribsandbbq.com/index.php
It would have been a great photo op, but he passed on the recommendation.
The move to turn our military into a bunch of pussies in SO MANY WAYS is in full throttle.
Changing rules of engagement, forcing homosexuality into the ranks and celebrating the behavior, putting women up front purposely, and shoving twigs and berries down their throats.
No wonder we cannot fight two wars at once any more.
Please, America, give Obama a pink slip in 9 months.
It’s a good thing for civilian statists that the military is controlled by the People and elected representatives.
And frankly for all citizens it’s a good thing.
But just for kicks and giggles I’d like to see Moochele try this in Pakistan, Egypt or any other military dictatorship.
Good luck telling a heavily armed hungry soldier to drop the cheeseburger.
