20 inches is a typical length for newborns so I certainly concur with your thought.

I thinkl that is a very difficult to understand part of scripture. I don’t know Hebrew. Part of the solution is find out exactly WHAT Hebrew word was used and find out what precise meanings it had.

There WERE “giants” in the earth. Cro-Magnon Man was 6’ tall and probably was mainly a meat-eater. Agriculturalists and pastoralists generally are smaller physically than hunter type people. Even more smaller are old society urban dwellers who oftne lived in squalid quarters, ate poor meals and had bad hygeine.

Read about the first Europeans impression of native American Indians. They often referred to them as “giants”.

On the other hand the word may have a deeper meaning than we can fathom.

The Sons of God and the Daughters of men passage is also very strange.

Credibility generally comes down to what we are calling giants. Ten feet, maybe even 12 feet or so doesn’t stretch my skepticism out of shape. It’s when people start talking about giants who were twenty or thirty feet tall that causes me to turn the channel or close the book. ...There have been a great many skulls shaped like that found in South America and elsewhere.

Shaquille O’Neal “Shaq” stands 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m) tall and weighs about 325 pounds (147 kg). If I was an explorer and saw him...I would say he was a giant of a man.
Robert Wadlow - He reached 8’ 11.1” (272 cm) in height and 490 pounds (222.26 kg) in weight. Thats big!
Bao Xishun, born in Inner Mongolia, measured at 2.36 meters (7 ft 8.95 in) tall
Leonid Stadnyk is said to be 2.54 m (8 ft 4 in) and weigh 200 kg

And then there is the poor kid Brenden Adams - was 7’ 4” at age 12. He was 4 1/2 feet tall as a 5 year old! http://slanchreport.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/75-middle-schooler-is-a-big-target-on-the-football-field/

So could there have been a bunch of people whose had a genetic tendancy for active pitutary glands or whatever and be called giants! Yes, no doubt about it.

poor kid...struggling to fit in...
Brendan Adams is only 14, and he’s already 7 foot 5 inches — making him the world’s tallest teen, according to Guinness World Records. He’s always towered over his classmates, and now he’s finally gotten medical clearance to join them on the football field. Brendan, who lives near Seattle, has a body full of tumors, had his spleen removed, teeth problems, bad arthritis, and a heart arrhythmia, so it’s been a struggle to get there.

File this one under "Oh So Mysteriouso", iow, please don't think I take this too seriously. :')

I didn't add the keyword, but don't mind it this once. The source is the ICR, which is a /joke alert on a good day.

Just adding to the catalog, not sending a general distribution.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

Cyclops Myth Spurred by "One-Eyed" Fossils?
by Hillary Mayell
National Geographic News
February 5, 2003
The tusk, several teeth, and some bones of a Deinotherium giganteum, which, loosely translated means really huge terrible beast, have been found on the Greek island Crete. A distant relative to today's elephants, the giant mammal stood 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall at the shoulder, and had tusks that were 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) long. It was one of the largest mammals ever to walk the face of the Earth... To paleontologists today, the large hole in the center of the skull suggests a pronounced trunk. To the ancient Greeks, Deinotherium skulls could well be the foundation for their tales of the fearsome one-eyed Cyclops... A cousin to the elephant, deinotheres roamed Europe, Asia, and Africa during the Miocene (23 to 5 million years ago) and Pliocene (5 to 1.8 million years ago) eras before becoming extinct. Finding the remains on Crete suggests the mammal moved around larger areas of Europe than previously believed, Fassoulas said... He suggests that the animals reached Crete from Turkey, swimming and island hopping across the southern Aegean Sea during periods when sea levels were lower. Many herbivores, including the elephants of today, are exceptionally strong swimmers.
The Histories (Book II)
by Herodotus
tr by G Rawlinson
"I went once to a certain place in Arabia, almost exactly opposite the city of Buto, to make inquiries concerning the winged serpents. On my arrival I saw the back-bones and ribs of serpents in such numbers as it is impossible to describe: of the ribs there were a multitude of heaps, some great, some small, some middle-sized. The place where the bones lie is at the entrance of a narrow gorge between steep mountains, which there open upon a spacious plain communicating with the great plain of Egypt. The story goes that with the spring the winged snakes come flying from Arabia towards Egypt, but are met in this gorge by the birds called ibises, who forbid their entrance and destroy them all. The Arabians assert, and the Egyptians also admit, that it is on account of the service thus rendered that the Egyptians hold the ibis in so much reverence."
In the Selincourt translation, the note for this passage is that no one has any idea what Herodotus describes.

Even with overly tall people, the head is not that far out of proportion to the size of the body at a young age.

What about the body measurements?

According to some accounts, early settlers when building new villages sometimes accidentally dug up grave sites of “indians” who were extremely tall - 7-8 feet.

When he heard about these finds, James Smithson who was married to and Indian, began gathering these finds up and taking them back to D.C. There, he stored them in the basement of the museum which is now called the Smithsonian ... where thay remain unseen and uncatalogued.

Smithson had a reason for this action which I do not remember, but I believe had something to do with politics and Indian lore.

Very tall indians today are not that uncommon, I was told by an Indian I knew.

From Buffalo Bill Cody’s autobiography:

“While we were in the sandhills, scouting the Niobrara country, the
Pawnee Indians brought into camp some very large bones, one of which
the surgeon of the expedition pronounced to be the thigh bone of a
human being. The Indians said the bones were those of a race of people
who long ago had lived in that country. They said these people were
three times the size of a man of the present day, that they were so
swift and strong that they could run by the side of a buffalo, and,
taking the animal in one arm, could tear off a leg and eat it as they
ran.

These giants, said the Indians, denied the existence of a Great Spirit.
When they heard the thunder or saw the lightning, they laughed and
declared that they were greater than either. This so displeased the
Great Spirit that he caused a deluge. The water rose higher and higher
till it drove these proud giants from the low grounds to the hills and
thence to the mountains. At last even the mountaintops were submerged
and the mammoth men were drowned.

After the flood subsided, the Great Spirit came to the conclusion that
he had made men too large and powerful. He therefore corrected his
mistake by creating a race of the size and strength of the men of the
present day. This is the reason, the Indians told us, that the man of
modern times is small and not like the giants of old. The story has
been handed down among the Pawnees for generations, but what is its
origin no man can say.”

When these giant babies were born to normal human women, it killed them at birth.
