Wolves stealing Yukon Quest trail markers

DAWSON CITY, Yukon - There are a lot of problems that can befall trail markers — treacherous conditions, dangerous overflow, deep snow and trails littered with fallen brush.

But an unexpected challenge for the Canadian Rangers who broke the Yukon Quest trail in Canada? Wolves stealing trail markers.

Easily resolved with a metal or concrete marker.

I’d have to guess it might have something to do with a male lifting its leg and marking, and another competing male coming alon....

It was 45 today here in Eagle, pretty nice. I've been punching a new trail back into the mnts behind house this winter; about 5 miles so far and there's this huge lick at base of mnt the moose been using for hundreds of years. Snow was waist deep, tough dragging a chainsaw through that stuff and can't ride on top with skandic due to trees.

THe Quest moved through here on Tues-Wed. Wolves pulling markers has been occurring for many years. I see more wolves along river every year too.

I see new people every Spring, going to live off the land, do it all; by following March, they are packed waiting for road to open so they can head for the border, ha. Alaska sure ain't for everybody and I'm glad of that. The minus 60 for a couple weeks doesn't bother me all that much. When I go into Fairbanks and see all the people, houses, traffic, congestion, just all the filth; now that bothers me. I couldn't imagine the lower 48 after all these years out here; guess I've found the place that makes me happy & complete.

Hey redpoll,
Couple years ago the family took a jeep to S.W. Colorado and drove Big Red.
Using fire trails we were three thousand feet above the timber line.
There were markers at various intersections but none led to where they indicated.
We finally made it to Ouray after dark and at the motel the clerk told us the local kids would go up on the mountain and either steal the signs or turn them so as to have touristas go the wrong way usually dozens of milse from anything other than ice flows.

This WAS summertime......that’s why I was so disappointed to see the constant dreary weather. Land of the Midnight Sun? Land of the Midnight Mostly Overcast might be more accurate.

I WISH I could see evidence that I’m WRONG. I’m intrigued by the THOUGHT of Alaska. I even memorized several poems by Robert Service about the Yukon and Alaska, and the Gold Rush. I checked into Real Estate For Sale in Wasilla. But the pix I saw of the WEATHER did NOT charm me at all.

The sweet little girl and the mess of fish are very nice....but.....please forgive me..... the sun doesn’t look bright enough to even cast much of a shadow.

Don't that just beat all? After reading your first post I immediately typed in a search for The Cremation of Sam McGee and here you go mentioning Mr.Service in the next post I read just after my search completes.

I first heard that back in the late 50s to early 60s -- dunno why my momma thought it was appropriate for a real little boy, but I never forgot it after she read it to me.

For the record........ Dawson City is in the Yukon, not Alaska.

Ahhhh.....new speeding ticket defense......the wolves hate traffic signs and were covering up the speed limit signs.

why on earth would you ever allow your dog to violate someone else's property?????

Not on purpose. She is extremely smart and has even learned to turn a dead bolt or pop the latch on the gate in the back yard. Luckily this is a small gated neighborhood and my neighbors and I just get a laugh out of it.

My “Baby Brother” and his family live in Seattle. I have visited several times, and like it. Although it does rain quite a bit, there are also many sunny days......unlike my impression of AK, where it never quite seems able to squeeze out a TOTALLY bright and sunny day. I don’t even mind big white puffy clouds. We get lottsa’ them here in Pennsyltucky.....but BETWEEN the clouds there are periods of bright sunshine. Thanks for the reply.

We finally made it to Ouray after dark...

I remember elk hunting up that way and the
christmas lights of Ouray looked just like
some swiss village from where we were up on
the ridge. We were drop camped the next valley
over under the China wall.

Well, Wasilla is mostly overcast, that is why the temp is moderate in the winter. A ring of mountains capture the warm air from the sound. It puts a cloud cap on the valley and traps the warm air in.

Yep, sun is not as bright. Thats Alaska for ya.

Best not come up, Alaska gets in your blood and you might find yourself happily trapped up here.
