Feds shut down Amish farm for selling fresh milk

The FDA has won its two-year fight to shut down an Amish farmer who was selling fresh, raw milk to eager consumers in the Washington region, after a judge this month banned Daniel Allgyer from selling his milk across state lines, and he told his customers he'll shut his farm down altogether.

The decision has enraged Mr. Allgyer's supporters, some of whom have been buying from him for six years and who say the government is interfering with their parental rights to feed their children. But the Food and Drug Administration, which launched a full investigation complete with a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and a straw-purchase sting operation against Mr. Allgyer's Rainbow Acres Farm, near Lancaster, said unpasteurized milk is unsafe and said it was exercising its due authority to stop its sale from one state to another.

Adding to Mr. Allgyer's troubles, Judge Lawrence F. Stengel said if he is found to violate the law again he will have to pay the FDA's costs for investigating and prosecuting him.

His customers are wary of talking publicly, fearing the FDA will come after them.

"I can't believe in 2012 the federal government is raiding Amish farmers at gunpoint all over a basic human right to eat natural food," said one, who asked not to be named but who got weekly shipments of eggs, milk, honey and butter from Rainbow Acres. "In Maryland, they force taxpayers to pay for abortions, but God forbid we want the same milk our grandparents drank."

The FDA, though, said the judge made the right call in halting Mr. Allgyer's cross-border sales.

"Intrastate sale of raw milk is allowed in Pennsylvania, and Mr. Allgyer had previously received a warning letter advising him that interstate sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal," said Siobhan DeLancey...

Raw milk can be problematic,...

You're not lying. It is addictive. I'm serious.

Isn’t it? Once you have the real thing, the stuff they try to pass off for milk at the grocery tastes like water.

Income tax records allow the government to go after those selling illegally. It never was illegal to own or use alcohol under prohibition but it was illegal to sell UNTAXED alcohol.

The federal is acting foolishly on behalf of large corporations. Every time I can I purchase from local farmers. These guys sicken me.

That being said anyone drinking unpasteurized milk is a fool.

That would pretty much be every human being that ever lived prior to the year 1800.

And we drank out of lead cups at one time too. There was a reason why out great great great great grandfathers came up with pasteurization.

Amish farmers => independent from government
“Amish” yutes => very dependent on government

The former are considered enemies of said government, whilst the latter are friends.

the eighteenth amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, and transportation of all intoxicating liquors as well as the importation or exportation of them.

“Anti-government extremists opposed to taxes and regulations pose a growing threat to local law enforcement officers in the United States, the FBI warned on Monday. These extremists, sometimes known as “sovereign citizens,” believe they can live outside any type of government authority, FBI agents said at a news conference.” And the most epic line ever written: “The extremists may refuse to pay taxes, defy government environmental regulations and believe the United States went bankrupt by going off the gold standard.”

The Amish MUST assimilate and be absorbed.

Indeed.

And in particular - stay the heck out of what I choose to eat or to feed my family. I do NOT need or want the FDA deciding what is safe or not safe for me to consume, since they are A-Ok with all manner of substances that I consider to be totally and completely NOT safe or beneficial.

May God give us strength.

Let me see... the government is okay with releasing terrorists confined at GITMO but wants to lock up Amish farmers for selling natural milk to people who want to buy it?

Yep. That sounds right. I am SOOOO glad we have the government protecting us.

No, anyone that says there is no God is a fool .. but I'll let you have your statement.

I looked that statement up and found a part of what may have been the problem is something called "Campylobacter", a bacterial infection that may result in diarhea, stomach pain and fever.

The article you cited added the word " Campylobacter" only because it is first cousin to salmonella.

I'm generally too laxzy (I think I'll let that typo stand ... I think it is more descriptive ..) to bullet point what I read, but if one searches the word, you may come to the conclusion that Campylobacter might be something to be concerned about.

More than one article states the problem may be prevented by washing your hands.

Campylobacter ... seems no more harmful that the flu that may kill you, a broken bone, not/or improperly set could cripple you and/or not brushing your teeth might cause your teeth to fall out.

More people get sick and/or die from FDA-approved prescription drugs than from raw milk. This is NOT a health issue, it is a government control issue, like everything these days.
