New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he plans to order flags on public buildings to fly at half-staff on the day of Whitney Houston's funeral to honor the songstress and Jersey native.

"Whitney Houston was an important part of the cultural fabric of this state," Christie said during a press release Tuesday. Christie also said the pop legend belongs in the same category as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

He said he will sign the order later in the week after Houston's family makes a final decision regarding time and place of the funeral.

A Newark church pastor announced Tuesday that that a private funeral will be held for the popstar on Saturday at Newarl's New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston sang

To give you an idea of how much our society has changed in 30 years, I was in the Marine Corps when John Belushi died in 1982 (also a bad combination of drugs). We joked about putting the base flag at half mast for Belushi and we doubled up in laughter at the thought of it. Of course, we were joking around and just the notion of putting a flag at half-mast for an entertainer (boozed up or not) was ludicrous.

Now 30 years later, here we are actually putting flags at half mast for entertainers - while our troops from Afghanistan and elsewhere come home in body bags with no fanfare except maybe a mention in their hometown paper.

She had a huge circle of friends who could have helped...but half of them are druggies, too. Few of those of whom you speak had what she had.

Next they'll be launching the: USS Whitney Houston.

Or more aptly...the Cirrhosis of the River.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Ya, is it really appropriate to fly the flags at half staff for a singer/entertainer?

I liked some of her music, but is she really deserving of such an honor?

How many of you even knew she was from New Jersey before her death, and the plans to have her funeral in that state? She was part of the cultural fabric of New Jersey? Really?

Gov Cristie, you dolt! The flag flies at half mast for people and dignitaries of honor... not for drug addicts, pimps and hollywood celebrities. She was great in her day to be sure, that is until that pimp and druggie Bobby Brown entered into her life. She made the choice to go down that road of self gratification/ destruction, is that what you want your kids to see, a woman honored for her self destruction?... should’a just left it alone...

No way a singer should get half staff.

Especially a singer who didn't even write her own songs. Yes, she was a great singer...but there are plenty of singers just as good as her, who are understudies on Broadway.

She just happened to have a look that was marketable, and the music industry funneled the best songs from various songwriters to her.

And their body parts are thrown into land fills and Arlington Nat Cemetery gets burials all screwed up and throws head stones in a ditch...
Priorities these days are completely wrong...

Well New Jersey might as well keep their flag at half mast all of the time to honor all of its citizens who have died.
Dipping the flag and flying the flag at half mast are supposed to be a thing of honor, not from some popularity contest.
Will Bruce Springsteen receive the same "order" on his passing simply as well because he too was a popular singer and entertainer?

I voted for El Hefe and was pleased when he yelled at a member of the teachers’ union. But, boy, has that act gotten old! He flits about the country giving blowhard speeches while we remain the most heavily taxed state in the nation. Now he’s lowering the American flag for a crack addict with a pretty face. To use an El Hefe phrase, he’s a numb nuts.

Although she did record that performance in the studio, the actual live version at the super bowl was lip-synched.

I’m not judging did you read what I wrote? For the good of our youth she should be publicly condemned for ruining and destroying her own life.

Well Chris “Lou Costello’’ Christie just lost my vote. But that’s ok. I had to hold my nose and vote for this fat-ass RINO anyway and I’m sick of doing that.

With the death of the republic comes a socialist state based on pop culture... If he had lived... Michael Jackson could have become president.

“Wouldn’t it be best for our youth if instead of honoring her, we cursed her to hell?”

When did the state of New Jersey get that power?
