Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum continues to ride his polling momentum into Ohio where he leads Mitt Romney by nearly two-to-one in the first Rasmussen Reports survey of Republicans in the state.

The new statewide telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary voters shows Santorum picking up 42% of the vote to Romney’s 24%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich draws 13% support, while Texas Congressman Ron Paul picks up 10%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.

The Santorum supporters here are too busy crowing and celebrating victories that have not actually happened, to hear much of anything else.

But if they think the MSM hates Newt, just wait till they hear what the Left has in store for the “Reverend Rick” in the coming days. Just google “Santorum” and you will find out that there is a whole new definition of “NASTY” coming out against him.

Amen to that.

Unfortunately, all four will be biting and chewing each other until the Convention.

It amazes me how you can see in front of you the guy that can take Romney out. What does Newt have 13%? He is not going to take Romney out.

Santorum can. Santorum ain’t the cool guy, but neither is Newt.

I am embarrassed at conservatives around here for rejecting a gift and thinking that they know better than the people who are voting now. People are choosing Santorum for a reason. It must be a good one or they would reject him.

I can’t imagine how great it would be if we got behind a winner, bolstered him up to go against the degenerate, America hating Obama.

I used to think we could beat Obama if we nominated an arrogant jackass. I think people are looking for a decent and honest person they can trust, not another arrogant jackass.

“So, if a debate moderator or reporter asks Santorum: “do you favor gay marriage and abortion?”; should he say “yes”, or “no comment”, or what?”

In a debate or interview they should answer the question and move on. They should not, however, make it the central theme of their campaigns, ads or stump speeches. They just need to attack Obama on things that most Americans can agree on. Spending, the debt, etc.

None of them generate much excitement overall, but Santorum does energize the conservative base more than the others.

It appears Gingrich has run his course and is losing relevancy, except to draw support from Santorum. Plus, Newt is double-digits behind Obama in every swing state. His negatives are way too high to be competitive.

Nothing new here. The “media” would be doing the same to any conservative nominee.

I am surprised at the opposition to him on this forum.

It is not him they oppose but the God that he declares.

Stay far, far away from any and all social issues. It is the only thing that ever energizes the Democrat base and turns many independents away.

Nonsense. There's a reason Democrats try to keep gay marriage referendums off of the ballot, especially during an important election. Those issues energize the conservative base. Obama is trying to make birth control the issue, because abortion is an increasingly loser issue for the libs. I don't think we want to be talking about birth control per se, but abortion and gay marriage are winning issues for us. This episode with the church needs to be played out as Obamacare giving the government control over our lives. If they came for the church on this, who will they come after next? And what's to stop a conservative president from stepping in and deciding to ban birth control if they have this much power over health care? The argument can be made to both sides of the aisle.

This sounds a lot like.. Sure not enough people are working, but if we hadn't passed TARP, it would have been a whole worse. The situation was much worse than anyone knew....yada, yada, yada.

By the way have you noticed, Newt is running 4th in a four man race.

Incorrect. Newt increased turnout in SC by about 35% when he won. The other states have been flat or with decreased turnout. Newt's been the only one to offer anything fresh and exciting into the race.

It appears Gingrich has run his course and is losing relevancy, except to draw support from Santorum.

It appeared after Iowa that Santorum had run his course and was losing relevancy, except to draw support from Gingrich.

Plus, Newt is double-digits behind Obama in every swing state. His negatives are way too high to be competitive.

Polls right now are utterly meaningless. They've been meaningless even mere days before some of these primaries, so why you would reference them in relation to an election NINE MONTHS AWAY is hard to imagine. Obama's ahead of all of our candidates right now. Maybe we should just give up or just let Ron Paul and his crew have this one just to get it out of his system.

I respectfully disagree.

Will Democrats come to vote for Obama:
Because of the economy?
Because of gas prices?
Because of unemployment?
Because of the deficits?

No. Not really.

Will Democrats come out to vote because of gays, abortion, contraception and trampling on religious freedom?

In droves.

Republicans will come out in force to vote against Obama no matter what. Democrats are not nearly as enthusiastic about Obama this time around UNLESS there is something that can motivate them to come out. That something is social issues.

Social issues motivate conservatives as well but we are already motivated to vote. Don’t give Democrats a reason to want to vote for Obama as well. Let them stay home on election day.

“........ and thinking that they know better than the people who are voting now.”

I see, so because some folks that get to vote before me, I should fall in line and trust their choice and not make my own decision.

If you truly believe that is how it all works, you’re dumber than a box of rocks. Morons following other morons is exactly how Obama got in.

“It must be a good one or they would reject him.” Well, I have rejected him and for good reasons.... I just try not to bash him too much, unless pushed to do so in defense of MY candidate.

Santorum certainly has qualities, but not the kind that interest me... not for the presidency.

You should go ahead and follow the sheep.... I will not.

Do you think negative ads are backfiring?

Just hitting diminishing marginal returns. He took out Cain without spending much money, just a whisper campaign. The first time he hit Newt Iowa it did real damage. The second time he hammered Newt in Florida had to go 99% negative with a multi million dollar barrage to get the same impact. You just can't up the game much more than 99%.

If it was actually backfiring you would see Romney's numbers go down, but he is still at 24%, same as he would be if he did absolutely nothing. So it isn't that it is hurting Romney, it just isn't hurting Santorum as much now that people are used to seeing it.
