Mitt Romney has discussed the possibility of imposing a nationwide crackdown on undocumented aliens, a move that his leading immigration adviser believes could force more than a million people to quit the country every year.
Kris Kobach, the source of some of Romney's most controversial ideas on immigration, has told the Guardian that he has been in direct discussions with the presidential candidate about possible changes to federal policy should Romney win the Republican nomination and go on to take the White House.
The changes would see "attrition through enforcement" – the state-level clampdown pioneered by Kobach in Arizona, Alabama and several other states – extended across the entire US in an attempt to winkle undocumented workers out of the country.
Kobach estimates that within the first four years of a new Republican presidency, as many as half of the current pool of undocumented aliens – some 5.5 million – could be made to flee by introducing much more aggressive enforcement of immigration documents.
The idea is to make the legal environment so hostile to undocumented families, and work so hard to come by, that they will choose to depart of their own volition – "self-deportation", as Kobach calls it.
Kobach, who has been dubbed the "dark lord of the anti-illegal immigration movement", was co-author of tough new laws in Arizona, Alabama, Missouri and Oklahoma.

wouldn’t trust Romney with a bubble pipe. And I certainly don’t trust him to tell the truth or do what he says.

Certainly works in state by state implementation, but more go north to illegal friendly jurisdictions than south. Must be supplemented by crackdown on use of stolen or phoney social security numbers to be a tight screen.
Mitt Romney is an opportunistic liar. His family fled to Mexico so they could keep their multiple wives. And there is some reason to believe that they returned as illegal immigrants.
Give Romney some credit, this place is becoming the Daily Kos.
I’d much prefer a state by state approach where the Federal government simply offers to support the states that choose to be tough on illegal immigration. IMO, this would:
* respect state’s rights
* focus on the states that want to change vs. imposing it on the states that do not want to change
* push illegals to migrate to the states that choose to be sanctuaries
* and, most importantly, FORCE liberals to actually live with the consequence (cost, crime, higher unemployment, ...) of their decisions
It would be much to our benefit if states/people came to their own conclusion that illegal immigration is a mess and unsustainable.
As far as reflexive anti-Romneyism here on FR, they seem to not be able to help themselves. If God himself came down and vouched for Romney, 1/2 of FR would jump into the pit of hell just to prove a point.
Let’s see how tough Governor Romney was with “sanctuary cities” in Massachusetts.

Arizona and Alabama merely adapted the federal immigration law.
The trick is, they actually enforce it, while the ferals do not, and actively harass LEOs like Joe Arpaio who do.
All Romney has to say is that he is going to enforce existing federal immigration law.
Anything else is simply posturing.

You were defending Romney this morning and you're still at it. Why should I give him credit? He lies every time he opens his mouth, and he is a liberal. Not moderate---liberal. I see no reason to applaud him.

Romney is making up ALL of his campaign statements, don’t fall for them, look at the man and see him as he really is, look at the first 60 years of his life and politics, and his governing before he switched his sells pitch for the national election.

This country has far closer to 50 million illegals than it has to 5 million.
