Is the Captain still onboard or has he initiated the lifeboat ejection sequence?

He and his officers have decided to watch from a distance... maybe from a small well stocked boat - - since their too far from shore to get a hotel room...

We took an Alaskan cruise on the Golden Princess last summer and it was great.

I hope the Italian captain doesn't slip and fall into a lifeboat [an excuse that ranks at the very top of the absurdity scale in nautical history].

Hey, if the 'captain' had been a Democrat, the New York Times and Washington Post would have bought that excuse.

I've been on ships from three cruise lines, Princess, RCCL and Carnival.

Princess crowds are quiet and much older, not many children around, if you like that sort of environment, go on Princess.

RCCL has a mix of both, older, families and younger people. In the Caribbean, the younger people and families are the majority. In Europe, it's an older crowd.

Carnival definitely has the fun ships. If you like to hear music, if you like to see people having fun, Carnival is the line for you.

We chose Carnival for this year's cruise, we're in our 50’s, but don't want to be stuck with the ‘old’ people even though we may be the same :)

There is a ship for everyone.

We loved Carnival 2 yrs ago, and were real disappointed last Nov. Their food really went downhill, both selection and quality. They must have hired a bunch of MBAs to do cost cutting.

I’ve also been on Norwegian (Sun & Spirit). I’ve been lucky with my cruises. Ships clean & well cared for, good staff who make every effort to be helpful. We usually travel in ‘off’ times, with fewer people on board. Maybe that helps. In fact, our first trip on Splendor was cross-Atlantic in November. There were only 30 kids on board. Lots of old folks though. :-)

"Have the Muzzies also permeated the cruise business?

They always have ... until they recently opened a center in Manila, Holland America's main training facility for hosptality staff was in Indonesia:

"Holland America Line operates a ... residential program in Indonesia at the ms Nieuw Jakarta facility where dining room waiters, housekeeping stewards, clerks and other staff receive training."

86% of Indonesians are Muslim.

On the last cruise ship I was on, the wait staff and cabin cleaning crews had many muzzies. How hard would it be for them to screw up the works? I better not say any more. It might give people ideas.

It could have just been the ship, who knows. I’m not saying Carnival is the “best”, it’s just an option.

Personally, I find the food on any cruise ship to be better than anything I cook for dinner. It seems that any cruise my family takes results in a diet after returning home, even with the workouts we schedule in the gyms.

Of the three lines, our personal preference simply on food is........princess and carnival tied rccl second.

But, let’s hope the Costa ship gets underway again and everything is fine.

Air conditioning and ventilation would be down. You could always go out on the deck in the sun.

re: Pirates attacking.. they have ‘toys’ onboard the ships..

Set Sonic Weapons to Stune ..
Prepare to Discharge..
zzzzzz.. zzzutt ..

I think they should let passengers shoot superballs with small charges at the pirates.. Heck, they used to let ya shoot clay pigeons and golf balls not so long ago.. well, not at pirates but ..

Regardless,, cruising is an acquired taste,, nothing like calm seas and a gentle breeze, a steady hand at the helm.. a sunset to die for.. but don’t lean out to far on the railing.. ya never know.

Fortunately, I guess, I have never been inclined to want to go on cruise. The last time one of my daughters and her husband went on one, nearly the entire passenger list was down with a bug during the entire Cruise!

Yes, Carnival is definitely more of a party atmosphere. I'd rather enjoy my cruise than put up with the obnoxiousness of the party all night crowd. Alaska is on my bucket list!

There was a really funny e-mail going around advertising a cruise specifically to shoot pirates a couple years ago...it’s probably on the web somewhere.

Muslim terrorists infiltrated and hijacked the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985, killing Jewish passenger Leon Klinghoffer.
