Lynn D. "Buck" Compton, a veteran whose World War II exploits were depicted in the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," has died, his family said.

Compton died Saturday in Burlington, Wash., after having a heart attack last month, the family told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/AmfhYe ) in a story Tuesday.

In January, nearly 200 guests, including actors from the miniseries, attended his 90th birthday party, the Skagit Valley Herald (http://is.gd/XScV1b ) reported.

"To us he wasn't really a war hero, he was just a hero, period," Tracy Compton told the Herald.

"Compton had been an All-American catcher on the UCLA baseball team. The distance to the fleeing enemy was about the same as from home plate to second base. Compton threw his grenade on a straight line — no arch — and it hit a German in the head as it exploded."

You're OUT!

Question for the thread:

Was “Buck” Compton actually considered an original member of the 101st ABD. IIRC, he joined the Easy Company in England just prior to D-Day. I didn’t know if he trained with the 506th PIR at Camp Taccoa since he played in the ‘43 Rose Bowl. I believe the 506th began forming in ‘42.

King Henry V: And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by from this day until the ending of the world but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, For he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother, Be he ne'er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition, and gentlemen in England now abed shall think themselves acursed they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whilst any speaks, that fought with us upon St. Crispin's day!

Since Lieutenant Compton didn’t die of a drug overdose and was never on American Idol I guess there won’t be any Governors ordering flags to fly at Half Staff for him.

@Taps

Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb’red.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

RIP, Buck, your rest is well earned.

Bless you Lt. Compton, and your Band of Brothers. Thank you for my freedom, for my children’s freedom, and for my grandchildren’s freedom.
We come from a time when it was recognized that the LAND OF THE FREE exists solely BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE.

I just finished reading his book.

Compton was a no-nonsense, dyed in the wool CONSERVATIVE.

Rest in Peace, Lt. Compton.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

TARGET! FIRE FOR EFFECT!

And for that reason Christie will never get my vote.

Rest in peace, Lt. Compton. You have stood tall amongst the greatest generation; you were one of the best of the best. Many there are who would have been proud to accomplish one tenth of what you did in your life.
