Obama Administration Blocks Law Requiring Texas Residents to Show Photo ID Before Voting
foxnews.com ^ | 3-12-12

Posted on 03/12/2012 9:04:52 AM PDT by Sleeping Freeper

The Justice Department is objecting to a new photo ID law in Texas for voters, saying the state has failed to demonstrate that the the law is not discriminatory by design against Hispanic voters.

The department's head of the civil rights division, Tom Perez, wrote a a six-page letter to Texas' director of elections saying that Texas has not "sustained its burden" under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act to show that the new law will not have a discriminatory effect on minority voters. About 11 percent of Hispanic voters reportedly lack state-issued identification.

Perez wrote that while the state says the new photo ID requirement is to "ensure electoral integrity and deter ineligible voters from voting" the state "did not include evidence of significant in-person voter impersonation not already addressed by the state's existing laws."

Perez added that the number of people lacking any personal ID or driver's license issued by the state ranges from from 603,892 to 795,955, but of that span, 29-38 percent of them are Hispanic.

"According to the state's own data, a Hispanic registered voter is at least 46.5 percent, and potentially 120.0 percent, more likely than a non-Hispanic registered voter to lack this identification," Perez wrote.

so buying an Amtrak ticket etc can be done without showing ID?

Holder and his racist pals who were put into the DOJ should have been gone after the black panthers incident but the GOP as spineless as they are sit back while now the DOJ corrupts the law, ignores comments like”my people” and now gives guns to the drug lords which in turn commits murders with those guns including our own.

Don’t worry Cantor etc, you lot sit back , back your elitist pal Romney and keep your power, seat and corruption.

can you or anyone tell me why Disney wants to take our finger prints even when when one has never been there and is there fro the first time for one day?

I refused to give them my finger prints of which some snotty nosed guy behind me went into another line telling his kid I am holding up the line etc.

I caught up to him and asked him “would you give your DNA too”
He told me he was a lawyer and that you have to do it but gave no reason why to which I replied about stop and searches etc.
He had no clue what I was talking about and my little toe was more of a lawyer than he was

Here in my small town in CT we MUST show a picture ID before voting. Even in town elections.

I wonder how we get away with that while Obamarx goes after states that pass similar laws?

Publish a notice in the paper and just do it. The DOJ has no authority to stop the state of Texas from enacting such a law. There is nothing stopping any legal immigrant from getting an ID - there is no discrimination.

Hey Nutmeg I hope all is well with you and Zelig. I hope Gov Perry has a set of balls that dismiss this based on the 10th Amendment. You can't cash a check without some form of ID. The same should be held when casting a vote. When I lived in Florida I had to present photo ID to vote and I didn't think it was racist or anything like that I thought it was the right thing to do.

I called the cable company yesterday because I have cable problems. I am in MY house, and I must produce government issue photo ID to prove who I am for them to do any repairs. Today, one must provide ID to do almost anything, except vote! I think we all get it actually. Voter fraud! Pretty simple.

I just heard on the radio that the 0 administration failed to get the law stopped. Which is it?

The Headline uses the word "blocked" but the text actually says "objected" and all that has been done is...

The (Justice) department's head of the civil rights division, Tom Perez, wrote a a six-page letter to Texas' director of elections"

I don't see anything that actually blocks anything, unless the author of the article left out info about a judge issuing a ruling or injunction.

And, as usual, in these hit pieces we see nobody wanted to hang their name on this, it is just from "Foxnews."

More info is needed here.

The following is what is being delayed and would be in place today if the DOJ would approve the ID law.

PHOTO ID INFO

1. When does the new photo identification law (Senate Bill 14) go into effect?

Subject to U.S. Justice Department approval of a photo identification law passed by the Texas Legislature in 2011, the new photo identification requirements will become effective on January 1, 2012.

2. What kind of identification will be required to qualify to vote in person under the new program?

A: A voter will be required to show one of the following forms of photo identification at the polling location before the voter will be permitted to cast a vote.

With the exception of the U.S. citizenship certificate, the identification must be current or have expired no more than 60 days before being presented for voter qualification at the polling place.

Obama is black, Holder is black. Obama is a Democrat, Holder is a Democrat. Hispanics likely vote Democrat.

Illegal Hispanics likely vote Democrat in greater numbers. A likely provable disproportionality of Hispanics without state-issued ID are illegals, in fact.

Obama is a race pimp Democrat, Holder is a race pimp Democrat. Real Justice doesn’t mean sh!t to them.

“Not to mention shoing it to board an airplane and get my hotel room, and rent the car”

To get on an airplane you also need to be naked scanned or opt for the hand up your crotch. In FL we have to show our photo ID. It’s never been an issue. It’s only an issue with the pigs in this administration because they know they will have to cheat to win. Of course illegals get every other perk of the Federal Government without paying taxes, why not let them vote more perks for themselves.

I can’t believe that there is nothing we can do about this. Can we do a class action suit against the Federal Government, Obama, and Holder for disenfranchising American citizen’s by canceling out our votes with fraud? There has to be something American citizen’s can do to take back the government.

Holder and goons believe in a racist society - they believe in inequality, they believe in controlling who wins - and who loses.

The difference between them and the KKK? Who's in charge. That's it: who runs the show - who works the bias in their favor.

The KKK wants whites in charge. Holder wants minorities in charge. Both groups are wrong. Both groups are racist.

Texas could provide free id’s or have cameras at each polling place to take pictures of those without picture ID’s, show Birth certificates etc and have those people vote provisional ballots until verified. If nothing else they would have pictures of all un identified voters to compare with other polling places..

Take their thumbprint and picture that should scare away many fruadulent voters...

We shall see if don’t mess with Texas means what it says...

I agree. Even here in the deep-blue People's Republik of Connecticut (getting more liberal by the day), we have to show a photo ID whenever we vote. I get the feeling that our despicable uber-lib governor (Dannel Malloy, ugh) will probably reverse that so no one will have to show photo IDs, to ensure the 'RATs rule forever here. So far we still, do though.

I have faith in Gov. Perry... hope we hear from him soon over this.

Texas is one of nine states and some other jurisdictions that come under the VRA of 1965. Even such things as congressional redistricting have to have the approval of the DOJ. A mess to say the least but this Law was extended for another 25 years under the signature of President Bush back in 2006.

These current administration power-grabbers use every tool at their disposal to void our Constitution. The only reason we have a United States of America is because the original 13 colonies banded together to form a union. That banding together was based on the language of the Constitution, and was and still is, a binding contract. The states that joined later could only join if their legislatures voted to obey and uphold that very Constitution. The Federal Government has become all too powerful. Not only are they abrogating their contractual responsibilities to provide for the common defense, they are acceding to the demands of the masses, company by company, eliminating the source of our country's wealth and stature.

Now, they say the Constitution is outdated, and won't function in a modern world. Well, the Founders included a provision to allow amending that Constitution. These current power-grabbers are nothing more than the robber barons who plagued us following the Civil War - only now, they have some sort of "official" sanction to do as they wish.

The primary reason the union has lasted so long is because the populace of the various states always have felt it to be more advantageous to belong to the union than not. Once that advantage starts to disappear, we'll see another Civil War. And it will be a doozie.

Right now, we have an impending crisis. It is time for states to band together and take back the federal government, on the basis that the contracts that the states agreed to have been breached by the Administration, and that the agreements that they signed are no longer valid. If they don't act, the results will end up being far worse than if they do. I just don't want my children to be the victims.

I sometimes think the government's grand plan is to intentionally create conditions so bad so as to actually eliminate masses of people by fomenting war so that there are fewer people to feed - people they can control. Paul Ehrlich's ultimate prophesies may come true... not because the planet can't support us, but because the political power structure can't stand to have free thinkers around.

TN has voter ID. You can even get a free photo ID just for voting; they'll take other state's IDs, expired IDs, as long as it's official. I'm sure TX has, or can find a way, to be compliant in a way that will pass court challenge.

This is all about political theatrics for the hispanic community. It'll work too.

“Send in Federal Thugs and start a civil war.”

I strongly doubt that.
Obama is a coward. He can game up, as long as he’s not opposed. He’ll chicken out. The DOJ cannot enforce against a law, but just go to court. By the time that’s done, the Texas Gov. has already organized the election.

The DOJ accusation is preposterous: NO ONE can prove a negative. Like Obama, Holder is an intellectual midget. He tried to stop oil drilling on private land in North Dakota over ... 8 dead birds, apparently found near oil wells, but the judge threw the case out as “frivolous”.

Texas already has had a voter ID law in place for decades.

The new voter ID law requires a photo ID.

I think this argument that photo ID is discriminatory is just going to fall flat on its face because the previous law was already in place.
