Thousands of elderly people are dying unnecessarily early because despicable age discrimination in the NHS is denying them treatment for cancer, a charity has warned.
A lack of treatment or insufficient treatment is contributing to 14,000 deaths a year in people over the age of 75, Macmillan Cancer Support has found, in what it called an unacceptable act of discrimination.
Deaths from cancer are reducing in most age groups but at a slower rate in those aged 74 to 84 and are increasing in people aged 85 and over, the report said.
The report, The Age Old Excuse: the under treatment of older cancer patients, said treatment options are too often recommended on the basis of age rather than how fit the patient is.
Professor Riccardo Audisio, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at St Helens Hospital, said: It is despicable to neglect, not to offer, not to even go near to the best treatment option only on the simple basis of the patients age.
This has been a horrible mistake that, particularly in the UK, we have suffered from.

Rank socialism and a good preview of Obamacare and its stated death panels.
Many elderly,and I’m one of them,would refuse treatment,and I do have a caring family.
Palliative care and that’s it.
At least I won't be neglected.

Old people never seem to die, they just get in the way.
We're working to fix that. "Just give 'em a pill." Obama

You forgot panels. SP had it right.
All along.
No, you have another option: bribe your doctor. It is common in all socialized systems.
Obama’s fault.
My wife's ex mother-in-law recently passed away at 99 years old, and it wasn't from medical neglect. 1 in 6 Britons alive today will live to be 100 So I think that study is a bit over the top.
There are several important considerations that should be made here.
The first is that using the NHS in Britain is voluntary, unlike in Canada, where no other system is permitted. So if a person is willing to leave the NHS for good, and they have money, they can still buy the care they need.
The problems begin when people not only want medical care, but they want it for free. Free stuff is never free, and in this case it comes with strings attached, that only those they want to give free stuff to will get it, not everybody.
Many counties in the US have long offered free medical care, up to a point, for the indigent. But they also just get the bare minimum, and then only if there is money to pay for it.
Yet there are still other alternatives. For example, a person can appeal to the generosity of the public for funds to get themselves surgery or medical care, if they are sympathetic.
But the bottom line is that this is not the fault of the NHS, but the fault of the philosophy behind the NHS, that created vast dependency on government that cannot be depended upon.
The basic idea is to change the demographics of the country as quickly as possible.
SP did indeed have it right from the very beginning..
Do any of them have cancer?

Read carefully. It’s coming to a state or city near you, maybe even to YOUR home! YOUR family!
“Many elderly, and Im one of them, would refuse treatment, and I do have a caring family.”
If that’s your choice, it’s ok by me. But, do you want to also make the decision for me and my neighbors? That’s not ok with me. That’s the nub of this issue.
Another nail in the coffin of the UK which is leading the West into the abyss of destruction.
Time to nuke the island from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
And some UK FReepers (or Anglophilic FReepers) wonder why I have such an antipathy for the UK. If they can’t figure it out by this article then you know the place is doomed to Third World, New Dark Age status!
