DETROIT -
The state-appointed review team tasked with combing through Detroit's money troubles reiterated Monday that the city is facing monumental financial strain and wants Gov. Rick Snyder to continues consent agreement talks with mayor Dave Bing.
"We declared that the city of Detroit is under severe financial stress, that there exists within the city a financial emergency," said review team member Conrad Mallett Jr. "We still, I think the majority of the persons on the emergency review board believe that an agreement can be struck between the state treasurer and the mayor that will give the city a go-forward path way that will provide the city with financial stability."
Mallett said he and others on the team don't believe an emergency manager is necessary for the city. Snyder has also said his end goal is not have one placed in the city.
"We believe that the elected representatives and the elected mayor in cooperation with the state of Michigan can do this work," Mallett said.
The review team faced a firestorm of criticism from more than 50 protesters disrupted the meeting.
Chanting "no consent decree" and breaking into verses of "We Shall Overcome," the crowd Monday has essentially stopped state Treasurer Andy Dillon from speaking several times.
Deputy mayor, city council president release statement
The following is a joint statement from Detroit Mayor Kirk Lewis and Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh:
"As Governor Snyder and Mayor Bing have previously stated, they do not want an emergency manager in Detroit, and neither do the citizens and elected officials in the City of Detroit.
It is also true that neither the Mayor nor the majority of the Council is in favor of a consent agreement. However, we are making significant progress with the State to develop a Financial Stability Agreement to restore Detroit fiscally and preserve the democratic process.
The Mayors Office and City Council have agreed not to discuss details until a final agreement is reached. Our goal is to have an agreement by the end of the week." Governor hands Detroit consent agreement
On March 13, Snyder unveiled a proposal giving a nine-member financial advisory board and its appointees sweeping power to restructure Detroit city government and control the citys finances. Dave Bing and City Council would remain in office -- but with reduced powers.
The state and city have been negotiating Detroit's counter-proposal to a Snyder plan.
Mayor Dave Bing balked at that plan, complaining it took too much authority from elected officials. He had called for a seven-member board to "monitor" the restructuring.
"Times are very difficult in Detroit and we need to all work together to get to financial stability," Snyder said. "I say there are three key things we need to do in Detroit. One is to get the city's finances to be stable and move in a positive direction. Second one is, we need to go a better job of basic services to the citizens. Public safety, lighting and transit. And then the third thing is we need to grow the city. The long term answer to Detroit's issues is a growing Detroit."
That's some damn good timing on the protester's part; those hearings are notoriously fast and fruitless as it is.
As a former native of Detroit and a current Michigan taxpayer, if the low lifes still residing within the city limits of a once great metropolis want to bite the hand that feeds it, let them go on without the help of the rest of the State of Michigan and see where it gets them.
May be the city council will just vote for unincorporation and let nature take its course. People will move away and they can put up a historic marker denoting the ruins of a once great city.
I feel sorry for Bing. I really thought that if anyone could do something about the place, he could. He had the right ideas but the problems and situation were just insurmountable.
I think that these troubles have had a bad effect on his health.
They only have one problem, there isn’t much of a city left worth burning down. So burn it, urban renewal is a wonderful thing.
I had my hopes but that's all I had. Ex-mayor Dennis Archer saw the writing on the wall and that's why he never ran for a second term.......
The city is on a resperator, heart machine and showing no signs of brainwave activity. It has been on life support for decades now. Unplug it and let it die....
emergency manager = bankruptcy trustee
Meanwhile John Conyers wants his “Personal Friends” Barrack Obama and Eric Holder to step in and stop the “racist” emergency manager law.
He says it specifically targets black urban areas.
Look at those(politicians, businessmen, even clergy) who are instigating(community organizing)the anger towards bringing in an emergency manager....and you'll most likely find the same corrupt benefactors who have been stealing from the same folks they claim to be so protective of their "sovereign rights" as citizens(saps)of Detroit.
When all else fails, and the facts are not on your side(or the "sludge" is about to be exposed)....bring in Sharpton and Jackson...and turn it into a race issue.
Sharpton spent MLK day in Ann Arbor protesting against the emergency manager law outside Rick Snyder’s house.
Mean while an 80 some year old black WWII veteran was crawling across a parking lot in Detroit after being carjacked by a black assailant and no one would help him.
Yeah, there are some race issues to be addressed but they don’t have anything to do with whites.
“Chanting “no consent decree” and breaking into verses of “We Shall Overcome,” the crowd Monday has essentially stopped state Treasurer Andy Dillon from speaking several times.”
These same fools would vote for Kwame tomorrow if he were allowed to run for Mayor.
Protestor, “This is white suprmacy and before we allow a takover of this city we will burn it down.”
Yea, that worked out so well last time....Idiot. Racist idiot.
Thanks cripplecreek. It’s the biggest repo seizure in state history — and there have been a lot of ‘em.
