Unelected EPA Bureaucrats Approve E15 Ethanol
American Thinker ^ | April 9, 2012 | Peter Wilson

Posted on 04/09/2012 8:17:50 PM PDT by neverdem

Last week, "an unelected group of people" over at the Environmental Protection Agency revised our national energy policy, approving a new gasoline blend with up to 15% ethanol, known as E15, which may be available in pumps this summer. Currently, most gasoline sold in the U.S. is E10, containing a maximum of 10% ethanol.

To review the backstory: the last time ethanol was in the news, it seems like its opponents, who come from both the environmental left and free-market right, had won a significant victory. Last summer, "a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress," to use Obama's words about ObamaCare, voted to discontinue subsidies for ethanol, effective 12/31/11.

The president termed the vote to end subsidies "ill-advised." Funny how he rails against "giveaways for the oil companies" -- which turn out to be tax write-offs afforded to most businesses -- yet had no compunctions about paying out 45 cents per gallon to ethanol producers. Rather than an "all of the above" energy policy, Obama seems to be pursuing "nothing from below."

Theoretically, 900,000 gallons of ethanol per day would produce a $17-billion annual subsidy. The actual number reported was lower, in the $6- to $10-billion range, but still much greater than the oil company tax write-offs of $4 billion that Obama finds outrageous, amounting to a few pennies per gallon of gasoline produced. (Four billion dollars spread over $133 billion gallons of gasoline per year comes out to 3 cents a gallon, and that doesn't take into account all the other petroleum products that oil companies provide.)

In any case, it appeared that common sense had prevailed. Ethanol was driving global food prices higher, causing riots in developing countries; rain forests were being destroyed so corn and sugarcane could be cultivated; cars got poorer mileage with ethanol...

Avoid this like the plague... it ruins all sorts of gaskets and hoses and plastic parts.

I’ve noticed several gas stations in our area popping up, marketing themselves as selling “Real Gas”, Ethanol free. There’s almost always a line of cars at those places with people waiting to get some.

“Good grief, we all know this won’t work. It will destroy your car engine. Is this what they want?”

“They” had no problem at all destroying lots of car engines, wasting the energy and human labor that went into building them, the economic health of those who can’t buy the cars those engines were in anymore, and jobs for mechanics and those in the auto parts recycling industry during Cash for Clunkers. Destroying jobs and the economic health of people is, in fact, what “They” do best.

The 15% ethanol isn’t really that bad, it’s the percentage of water that it attracts-which is basically unavoidable if it is transported or stored. As I recall, there was a time not too long ago when people got sued by the state or even went to jail for selling watered-down gas. Now, it’s the law.

Pure-gas.org has a list of stations in the US and Canada that sell ethanol-free gasoline - have used it in the past and seems to be kept up-to-date. One could always call the station to verify.

I feel bad for kids today.

They cant get a cheap car because of cash for clunkers.
If the could they couldn’t afford gas ,even if they could get an entry level job.
And then Obama wants to force them to pay for healthcare premiums when they are 23 and healthy, further diminishing their dollar.

Did I mention the inflation?

I hope they rise up on Obamas narrah ass in Nov

Fixed income folks are being brutalized too.

E10 wrecks those engines now. I know my car is not designed or approved to run E15.

Plenty of pure gas at home in Idaho. None to be found in San Diego where I’m working and riding my bike.

It is as bad as pouring battery acid into your engine. YOU run that crap... dissolves live rubber seals... Viton rubber turns to jelly... I deal with this crap... I know what Chevron has to do to their equipment to blend and deliver it. It is a communist green dream to destroy "polluting engines".

You can’t fix stupid, you can only vote it out of office.

I don't think "stupid" is planning on being voted out. In the words of his hero,Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, loosely translated:

"You know, comrades, that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this — who will count the votes, and how.

Count on it. With embellishments, such as riots in the inner cities, and pre election prep, like challenging the authority of the Supreme Court to rule a law unconstitutional.

There’s a list on the internet of stations that sell gas with no ethanol for the entire state of Texas. Problem is the nearest one is about 3 hours drive from us. My car will not run on anything more than E10. This is really bad news.

This is a payoff to the UAW in the lines of "cash for clunkheads."

The cash for clunkheads had people trading in $10,000 used vehicles for a $3,000 rebate so the vehicle could be destroyed and taken off the market, forcing people to buy new vehicles.

With E15 they just destroy the engines outright, forcing people to buy new vehicles.
