Do Guns Belong on Public Transportation? (MO)
opposingviews.com ^ | 11 April, 2012 | Mark Berman

Lawmakers in Missouri are considering a bill that would allow guns on public transportation.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that legislation is pending that would prohibit such cities as St. Louis and Kansas City from using local ordinances to ban guns on trains and buses.

Supporters of the bill say it would make riders safer, arguing that no one would try to commit a crime if they know other riders might be armed.

Critics feel the opposite; they say people will stop riding mass transit if guns are allowed because they won't feel safe with the weapons around.

The bill's sponsor said he proposed the legislation after gun owners contacted him.

“They feel it’s very incumbent upon their safety and their Second Amendment rights,” said Rep. Ed Schieffer, a Democrat. “I know this an emotional issue for people. This is about making people feel safer about riding."

But crime really doesn't seem to be an issue on public transportation in Missouri. St. Louis Metro officials, for example, say there were just 16 assaults and three robberies in 2010, and that the system won the Transportation Security Administration’s “Gold Standard” for its commitment to security and passenger safety this year.

I think more people of limited means use public transportation. What possible reason is there to prevent people from exercizing the Constitutional rights on public transportation?

Because Eric Holder's people consider violent crime to be a legitimate career path, and armed victims to be an OSHA violation.

Considering how much crime takes place on mass transit by the diversity crowd, yes, the law-abiding should be able to.

9/11 would never have happened if the passengers had been armed. It was a massive Second Amendment failure.

I know of twenty-five people (six of whom are dead) who probably wished that someone else had a gun handy when Colin Ferguson waged his personal war against white people on the LIRR.

Public Transportation (buses) are the only places I’ve been physically assaulted.

So, it follows in my experience that the BEST place to carry is on Public Transport.

Until they decide to ban criminals from using public transportation then YES I should be allowed to be armed using public transportation.

Armed?? The passengers out numbered the terrorist 15 to 1 or more at times. Not having a weapon is not an excuse. A simple black friday mob attack would have plenty to overwhelm the terrorist.

AHA!! The magic word, “Legal”. Can anyone inform us of the number of random shootings committed, anywhere, by legally licensed, properly motivated LEGAL GUN OWNERS?
(Sound of crickets, I bet.)

It always goes this way. “People will avoid mass transit if they know guns may be aboard”. Fact of the matter is, currently, there are guns aboard, and 99.997% of them are being carried by criminals. Law-abiding citizens who put themselves through CCW training, vetting and endorsement processes likely do not illegally carry at all. So, those who believe that good folks will avoid mass transit because a few Missourians (136k CCW endorsements active as of 31 March per DOR reports published on their webpage, of just over 6 million total residents in the state) are simply stupid. Either that or they want to frighten plain folks. Figure out which.

I would rather hope that the guy or gal next to me on mass transit is lawfully armed than be forced to assume he is unlawfully armed....

So only people who own cars should be allowed to own guns? Isn’t that racist, or something?

>>>I know of twenty-five people (six of whom are dead) who probably wished that someone else had a gun handy when Colin Ferguson waged his personal war against white people on the LIRR.<<<

Ironically, the idiot mother and wife of two of the victims is now one of the leading gun grabbers in Congress. If not for New York’s anti-2nd Amendment laws, Ferguson likely would have stopped by an armed passenger or passengers (or known better than to even attempt his murderous rampage), McCarthy’s husband would be alive and her son would not have been maimed.

Did Colin Ferguson care about NY gun control laws? Did he care that guns were not allowed on the LIRR?

Criminals don’t belong on Public Transportation!

So, unless the gov’t is going to start screening riders for prior criminal convictions, I’m going to assume my protection is my business!
