Mitt Romney, it turns out, was against calling stay-at-home mothers working moms before he was for it.
MSNBCs Chris Hayes broke the news this morning. Back in January, Romney appeared at a town hall even in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he explained his position on welfare.
While I was governor, Romney said, 85 percent of the people on a form of welfare assistance in my state had no work requirement. I wanted to increase the work requirement. I said, for instance, that even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, Well thats heartless, and I said No, no, Im willing to spend more giving daycare to allow those parents to go back to work. Itll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work.
Read that again: I want the individuals to have the dignity of work. And by individuals, Romney means mothers.

Yet ANOTHER “issue” that Mitt Romney cannot exploit without there being documented evidence of him recently favoring the position that he currently protests. Its ironic that his lack of consistency is his one constant.
Oh well, add this to the mountainous pile of Romney hypocrisy. Since everyone loves Ann so much, maybe they should nominate - her. There may at least be a chance that she doesn’t share her husband’s repugnance toward truth and reliability.
He was talking about welfare moms. How low will the romney haters go.
Mitt Romney’s brain child: “Wheels for Welfare”. Free car, free car insurance, free auto repair and even free AAA.
What a conservative. It worked until Scott Brown and his Democrat Governo had to scrap it because it was bankrupting the state.
Thank you for my first big laugh of the day! Perfect description of Romney.
The issue here is The Nanny State. Romney would rather pay for the mother to use institutionalized daycare than to pay the mother to take care of her own kids. Conservatives would rather pay for neither.
Ezra Klein is a jerk. Come on now, Romney was talking about welfare moms demanding that taxpayers subsidize their lifestyle. Yes, they should go to work. My kids see their dad go to work every day, what do these kids see? They see their mom getting a government check every month. That is their role model. And we wonder why 30% of the federal budget goes to various aspects of social services. Thanks for being the voice of reason.
I don’t have a problem with saying welfare mothers with no husband or family means of support need to go to work. Also, let’s remember, there are a few legitimate cases such as young widows and women whose husbands have run off who are in this situation — not every mother on a welfare program is a deadbeat welfare queen. The program was originally designed to help people who most of us would agree are in need of help, and has turned into a horrible nightmare rewarding unmarried women for having more babies. Helping mothers in legitimate need is the proper role of the church and the extended family, and this is a perfect example of what happens when government starts doing things it should not be doing.
However, I have a major problem with what Romney said about homemakers needing to learn the “dignity of work.”
Sometimes you can do the right thing for the wrong reasons.
Here’s Romney’s quote again. I don’t have a problem with what he did; I have a problem with what he said were his reasons.

Try and keep up, this is not about me but Romney.
You mean, Obama, I think the Muslim call to prayer is the most beautiful thing ever? ;)
Hey, it’s sad when the Republican nominee can’t even argue that he’s the better christian, being a pro abortion, pro gay nominee.
But go ahead, support Romney. That’ll show the Republicans.
Bfl
It doesn’t get any lower than his tacit support for abortion, endorsed and paid for via Romneycare.
Anything else is just “icing”.
Romney must go.
Exactly. Stay-at-home mom in a self-supporting family is NOT the same as welfare mom.
Sounds like he is being quoted out of context.
Romney was not talking about ALL mothers or parents, but those on welfare.
Ezra, you are an utter scum bag.
I don’t Luke him but he’s going to be the nominee. Obama must go and mitt is the last man standing. Governor Perry was the most qualified and he was run out of town. Newt generated excitement in SC and I was hoping after perrys endorsement that he would do well in the south. It didn’t pan out. Am I supposed to root for someone who realistically doesn’t stand a chance? I admire the work you do on the BC and obama’s illegitimacy issue. Will just have to agree to disagree on this.
if the taxpayers are paying for it, you are an unemployed idle layabout...
I am no Romney supporter and will not vote for him, but taking his words out of context is beneath conservatives.
You sound like the liberfal if yoou think living off taxpayers is better than working.
