An Army soldier who lost his arms and legs during his third tour in Afghanistan last week underwent surgery Monday as supporters from around the globe offer prayers and messages of hope on a family website.
Army Staff Sgt. Travis Mills, of Vassar, Mich., was injured when he stepped on an IED April 10 while serving with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is recuperating at a hospital in Germany and hopes to return stateside on Tuesday, three days after his 25th birthday, his father told FoxNews.com.
"He's in a tremendous amount of pain right now, but he's sleeping," Dennis Mills said. "But as far as I'm understanding, his vitals are good. But it's still early."
Mills said he last spoke to his son on Sunday.
"He was pretty upbeat," Dennis Mills continued. "He has his moments, but he was doing really well. He sure is looking forward to getting back to the good ol' United States."

Lord watch over him
That’s enough. Not one more drop of blood should be shed for these barbarians. Let them deal with their own chaos.
Prayers for this Soldier and his loved ones.
“commander zero” has already surrendered to the savages. No more, everyone home now.
DOUBLE DITTO !!!
Uncovered costs are probably related to family member travel, other expenses not directly related to his care.
Saw these war service-related amputees at the old Walter Reed while undergoing treatment in 2009. I was (and still am) in awe of their wonderful, positive spirits despite the severity of their injuries. Just accept reality of the situation and get on with getting better.
The honored dead have made their ultimate sacrafices and are finished with pain and suffering; these disabled service men and women will continue to bear scars and endure pain 24/7/365 the rest of their lives for the service they undertook on our behalf .
We simply can’t do too much for them and their families.
Heartbreaking. What a wonderful young man.
Damn those that did this to him. I, too am sick of a country and people who can’t take some responsibility for their own well-being..and an Armed Forces fighting again with one hand tied behind their back. It isn’t right, never is.
We owe this young man the kind of care and support that he deserves when he comes home and for the rest of his life. A hero.
Yes, let them blow their own asses up. The populist knows damn well what is going on and where these bombs are being placed. May they all go off at once....just to angry to make a lot of sense.
