Taxpayers could end up having to fork out another £900 million to the European Union next year, costing each family in the UK an extra £666.
A draft budget for 2013 is believed to propose a seven percent increase, £7.4 billion, of spending on this year's budget of £107 billion or around €129.1 billion.
The move would raise the cost of membership for Britain to £14 billion from £898 million, according to the Daily Express.
Britain contributes 12.4 percent net of the Brussels budget and the increase would be double the UK's latest inflation rate and more than four percent above the EU's cost of living increase. …
The EU has previously been criticized for unnecessary spending, and in February Chancellor George Osborne refused to sign off the Commission's 2010 accounts because of errors amounting up to £4 billion.
It has also failed to get auditors' clearance for the past 17 years.
Conservatives in the European Parliament are expected to fight the increase and MP Douglas Carswell said Britain should refuse to pay more. …

I wonder how much it costs those tax filers who DO pay taxes. If it is like the United States double the cost per TAXPAYER since about half do not pay or get TAX REFUNDS without paying any income taxes.
We are slightly more sensible than that.
If you do not pay tax, you cannot get a refund. That is a bit of a no brainer and one aspect of your system that baffles us here in the UK.
As for paying taxes, if you are employed, it is taken out of your paycheck each week/month. No filing involved. Your employer does the accounts and sends the appropriate amount to Infernal Revenue. Me, I use a computer program that does all the calcs in under a minute and sets up the bank routing.
The only time you need to file is if you are self employed, the owner of a company, or have extra income outside of your main job.
Worth far less than a farthing.

Just to expand slightly:
Mortgage deductions, pension deductions and charity deductions are all automatic and dealt with at source.
Deductions for children used to be automatic, now you fill in a two page form per year and you get your monthly deductions direct deposited.
Thanks again. Do you have any idea of how large a tax collection group (like our IRS, etc) does the Government have, given that you have a VAT and income tax too?
I have read that they have about 30,000 direct employees. About half of them do the day to day work, the other half investigate, along with Customs and the FSA. (It is sort of a joint thing)
There are roughly another 20,000 civil servants who manage the whole process, co-ordinate with pension schemes and mortgage providers and run the child tax credit scheme.
It is a surprisingly lean department for our population.
