Labor Dept. withdraws farm child labor rule one day after Daily Caller report goes viral

Under pressure from farming advocates in rural communities, and following a report by The Daily Caller, the Obama administration withdrew a proposed rule Thursday that would have applied child labor laws to family farms.

Critics complained that the regulation would have drastically changed the extent to which children could work on farms owned by family members. The U.S. Department of Labor cited public outcry as the reason for withdrawing the rule.

“The decision to withdraw this rule — including provisions to define the ‘parental exemption’ — was made in response to thousands of comments expressing concerns about the effect of the proposed rules on small family-owned farms,” the Department said in a press release Thursday evening. “To be clear, this regulation will not be pursued for the duration of the Obama administration.”

The rule would have dramatically changed what types of chores children under the age of 16 could perform on and around American farms. It would have prohibited them from working with tobacco, operating almost all types of power-driven equipment and being employed to work with raw farm materials.

A lesson he did not learn, If he gets re-elected he will come back with more flexibility and he won’t care what farmers think.

Is it OK for my kids to finish cutting the grass?

As long as they're done by January you should be good.

"Is it OK for my kids to finish cutting the grass?"

With a motor? No. They may reach under the deck.

With a manual push? No. They may trip on a root and thrust their fingers into the rotor blades.

With scissors? No. They may run, fall, and impel themselves.

With a goat? No. The goat poop creates fecal runoff that poisons the wetland created by the lack of maintenance to government controlled drainage systems, as well as methane production.

So - NO, just NO. Let them play their video games you rouge.

If a farm incorporated then that’s a business and not a sole proprietorship. Perhaps they should disincorporate. Choosing one’s mode of business for all the different things done in life is critical in so many ways.

.. What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest,
had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? ..

That’s what I was wondering. I wonder if it’s ok for them to work with raw meat when cooking supper?

That’s right, and it’s a nefarious reason IMO they are trying to put the small family farms under, and that’s to create government run farms to make the populace beholden ever more to their Socialist Government for everyday needs.

Communism.

Axelrod told Obummer that you better tell the Unions we are going to lose the election on this issue. You see how fast Obummer fliped flopped his labor department. The end of the road is near as America will wake up vote Obummer out in November. He keeps getting the snowball gaining speed as it rolls towards the election.

This is not a win IMO, but simply a reaction to being exposed. They will now take time out to reevaluate their approach, and re enter with the same plate of crap from another direction that they deem less conspicuous.

Farm land in Maryland where I live is either left in the family or purchased by Doctors or Lawyers who have the bucks to buy . No farm in this state that I know of could buy the land ,pay the mortgage and fertilizer bill, and grow enough to to make a decent living. We have a few farmers who are big time and work acreage for others who have given up, but where I live there isn’t a former farmer around who hasn’t had to find outside work,or take on acreage under a lease.

I have a friend who is a DC lawyer who told me about his investment in a large MD farm in February of this year. Said it was a good way to park his money since he couldn’t get a return in the banks at 1/2% interest.

I’ve got a suggestion which may in turn expose the reason they tried to implement these rules.

Let’s get anyone and everyone that had anything to do with promulgating these rules. Then let’s ask anyone there with hands-on farm experience to stand up. Assuming anybody stands up (I doubt it), let’s ask each one how many man years of experience they have. Betcha the total won’t be more than 25.

This is what happens when do nothing bureaucrats try to rule make for something they know nothing about. It’s gotta stop!

How about a FOIA summons to produce information about all contacts with FAA, the Farm Bureau, 4H and other farm organizations requesting input on these rules. Betcha it’s damn near zip.
