A New Haven pizza parlor won't deliver in certain neighborhoods after two men pulled a gun on its driver outside a Willis Street home.

Depending on where you live in New Haven, you may have to pick up your order from Pizza Heaven II.

Steve Shain has expanded his no-delivery-after-dark area map after one of his drivers was nearly robbed over weekend.

Pizza Heaven II used to make regular deliveries in the Willis Street area, but now the residents will have to come get their wings, salads or pasta themselves.

"You can walk out there, and someone can shoot you," he said.

This is a common, if little reported phenomenon in America's inner cities. One of the most frequent types of robbery is based on a set-up call to have a Pizza delivered to a certain tenement, and when the delivery boy comes in, he is robbed at gun or knife point by someone lurking in the hallway, before he gets to the apartment, where he was asked to deliver.

Often, the apartment resident has no clue that he is being used, in this manner.

First, the good pizza places in New Haven don’t deliver, period. Sally’s Apizza is worth a pilgrimage.

Second, in days of yore I was a pizza delivery man of bad pizza in Meriden, CT, which has a similar crime profile. I let the management know that I would not deliver to Springdale Ave. (street of the Diablos) after 10PM.

Red-lining can happen at any level.
