Michele Bachmann claims Swiss citizenship [not kidding]

Rep. Michelle Bachmann is now officially a Swiss miss.

Bachmann (R-Minn.) recently became a citizen of Switzerland, making her eligible to run for office in the tiny European nation, according to a Swiss report Tuesday.

Marcus Bachmann, the congresswoman’s husband since 1978, reportedly was eligible for Swiss citizenship due to his parents’ nationality — but only registered it with the Swiss government on March 19. Once he did so, Michele automatically became a citizen, too, according to the Honegger.

Trying to find info on Bachmann’s new district but having a tought time. What I do know is that she was re-districted, but as I recall it was two districts joined as one. Very odd how hard it is to find info on Google. Just three months ago she announced her decision to run again for the house.

If it had been anybody else winning the nomination, expcet you know the names, she would have tried to possibly help out more and get into the cabinet/administration if they won.

Well I just found this:
http://www.minnpost.com/dc-dispatches/2012/02/bachmann-seek-6th-district-seat-despite-redistricting

It sounds like she is basically running in the sane district but that is changed locations and merged with another. She doesn’t need to move, but she might into the new district as her house is now in the 4th.

Also what happened is they pairied her up with another incumbent, a democrat. But She is still with half theoriginal 6th district she ran for in 2007 to 2010. But it is more liberal/progresive the new district 6.

Not fining much else about her chances to win, what is going on, etc... Sounds like the focus has not been on her since December.

I found another atricle that confused me a bit. That one made it sound differently the situation. Instead of the 6th district moving into Betty McCollum’s area and Michele Bachmann wanting to stay in the 6th because she has the best chance to win their and thus going up against Betty McCollum, it made it sound that because her area was moved into the 4th due to a population shift that she would go where the 6th distrcit was because she does not want to face Betty McCollum and thus she has a better chance in the 6th without facing Betty. But who her democrta challeneger would be I don’t know. I doubt her 2010 opponent Tarryl CLark would run again.

That was the case. Bachmann did not want to face the more progressive district of Betty McCollum’s that is now where she lives. So she is not running in the 4th district for re-election, but she is running in the new 6th district’s location. She did not need to move into the new distrcit to run, but she is still thinking about moving into the currrent 6th district. It sounds like the 6th where it is more in her favor and thus conservative. So it sounds like the DNC might have become resigned into not putting money into the race as they have bigger fish to fry. They probably gave up caring after Bachmann soundly defeated Clark two years ago. I doubt she will run unopposed in the general though, but it will be a stiff running against her as DNC is conceding the district to her.

Minor point- Germany does allow dual citizenship.

Not enitirely so. My wife was a German citizen and got naturalized. In order to regain her German citizenship, she would have to renounce her American citizenship. By becoming an American, she lost her German citizenship.

From Nationality Act (Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz, StAG)

Section 25 [Loss of citizenship on acquisition of a foreign citizenship following due application for the same; approval of retention of citizenship]

(1) A German shall lose his or her citizenship upon acquiring a foreign citizenship where such acquisition results from an application filed by the German concerned or his or her legal representative, whereas the represented person shall suffer such loss only if the qualifying conditions for application for release from citizenship apply as stipulated in Section 19. The loss under sentence 1 shall not take effect if a German acquires the citizenship of another member state of the European Union, Switzerland or of a state with whom the Federal Republic of Germany has signed a treaty under Section 12, sub-section 3.

(2) Citizenship shall not be lost by any person who, prior to acquiring foreign citizenship following their application for the same, received written approval from their competent authority for retention of their citizenship. Where an applicant is ordinarily resident abroad, the German diplomatic mission abroad shall be consulted in this connection. The public and private interests shall be weighed up in reaching the decision on an application pursuant to sentence 1. With regard to an applicant who is ordinarily resident abroad, special consideration shall be accorded to the question of whether he or she is able to furnish credible evidence of continuing ties with Germany.

Germany has eased its citizenship controls significantly in large part to accommodate the Turkish guest workers who have stayed for generations. That said, relatively few have been naturalized and when the Germans discover they have retained their Turkish passports/nationality, they take away their German citizenship.

Boy, you’re comprehension of the English language is obviously subpar.

How, in a logical argument, is your point valid to mine?

How is judging Palin, whom I fully support, as a “moron” through comedy skits the same as the reality of Bachman’s campaign, or her pesonally, not having the simple intelligence to know that if you are going to use some sort of sound bite tactic you might want to simply, with all the tech we have now, lock down your facts?

I’m not stupid enough to believe Palin said “I can see Russia from my porch” when it’s a bad SNL skit, that you accuse me of not understanding, from the FACT Bachman said it herself.

At one time it was necessary to renounce the citizenship of any other country to become a US citizen as part of the oath of allegiance.

That made perfect sense to avoid conflicts of interest even if the other country was supposedly a friend. Other countries have different priorities and interests than the USA.

Any elected official should be required to renounce all foreign citizenships. We have to much influence in the USA by world corporations that have no USA citizenship and by those who straddle fences of allegiance. Elected officials must have only one country of allegiance.

Oath of Allegiance:
“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the armed forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”

There is some speculation that Obama by virtue of his father, a British subject, obtained a British passport. No proof however.

Obama likely retains rights to be a British National due to his legal father status in 1961. Like some who have posted in this thread he could be a British Overseas National by simply applying. He would not have lost this capability when Kenya became independent - contrary to some reports.

To formally renounce the claim or ability to claim a filing of the British form RN is needed in writing and in front of a British official.

Good post and link.

When entering the US as a ‘dual/multi-citizen’ you MUST present your US passport and represent yourself as a US citizen. I assume you must also represent yourself as a US citizen in any legal or financial dealings while in the US.

This is where Obama may have a problem in the 1979 timeframe. Declaring as a foreign national upon entry and ‘leveraging’ a foreign status during college may be a serious issue for him.

Without a doubt Obama was considered an Indonesian citizen since both of his parents were considered Indonesian citizens by Indonesia. Even though his mother seems to have retained her dual status during her time there Obama probably could not as a child. Hence the likely reason he was removed from her passport in 1968.

Indonesia law mandates that a wife of a citizen does become an Indonesia citizen after a period of time after marriage unless he spouse renounces their Indonesian citizenship within a year. After moving to Indonesia in 1967 the mother probably had to legally establish her Indonesian citizenship while there. Obviously with that action Obama also became an Indonesian citizen.

So without a doubt Obama had Indonesian citizenship status after 1968. That never gets reported.
