Obama and gay marriage: What he's risking in an election year
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 9, 2012 | By Paul West

President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage is an election-year boost to his liberal base that comes with some risks.

The move is likely to hurt him in the South. One in three Southern swing voters are strongly opposed to gay marriage, a recent Pew Research Center poll found. Just this week, North Carolina, which Obama carried narrowly in 2008, approved one of the toughest bans on same-sex unions in the country. If the switch on same-sex marriage ends up costing him states in the fall, North Carolina will be the first place to look.

More central to his reelection will be the impact in Virginia, one of the top battlegrounds in the country, where a recent statewide survey showed him with a slight lead over Mitt Romney. “There could be some element of risk there,” said veteran pollster Andrew Kohut, who directs the Pew Research Center.

The reactions of minority voters will be closely watched. African Americans are unlikely to abandon the president, though his decision will surely give some older blacks pause. Six months of relentless assaults by the Romney forces, however, will likely boost their determination to see Obama reelected.

Some Latinos may well have second thoughts, particularly voters cross-pressured by the Catholic church’s aggressive opposition to gay marriage.

“Hispanics who are less committed to Obama and are otherwise upset because they feel he broke his promise to pass immigration reform". A downscale white voter in Ohio who was already leaning against the president might lean a little bit more against him now.

Obama’s decision unleashed fresh excitement among gay and lesbian donors, already one of the largest sources of campaign money for the president’s reelection.

Any other candidate besides Romney would tear into Obama about this and maybe Romney can find some surrogates who still will. The polls are on our side here and a savvy pol would use it to his advantage.

Yes he did it for money. Also Obama has gone all in on a leftist revolution reelection policy. He should lose, but if he wins God help us all.

With or without this issue, he’s burnt toast. HE carries too much baggage; I think it’ll be a 45 state sweep. We have had enough. period. Loved Rush’s rant this afternoon. sd

I wrote last week....Obama really doesn’t want a second term. Michelle hates DC and dealing with whites.

It’s another attempted distraction. This will be his game plan. Don’t let the focus be on the economy. People will fall for it.

No doubt about it. He makes the calculation and concludes the money is more important than the loss of some democrat social conservative votes.

Agree with you, dog. The left (and a lot of those on the right) are going to be shocked at the results of this election. Obammy is going to lose in a landslide. The only states he will win: CA, NY, WA, MA, RI, VT and CT, maybe MD.

Wake me when it's over.

Simple:

1. Axelrod knows Obama was (still is?) homosexual. They knew who the guys were (and are).

2. Barry's handlers have the same GAYDAR we FReepers do and they saw the same effeminate behavior, the whistling of his 's's, the trowing like a girl, and they also knew he spent 13 years on the mainland, 10 before meeting Moochie, and they couldn't come up with even one woman willing to say Barry and slipped her the man-meat. Barry is as queer as any homo you'll ever meet. But since DC and the lamestreet media is absolutely jammed with queers, they could count on a cover-up. They couldn't afford Barry being outed in 2007, so they punted.

3. Now it doesn't really matter. After yesterday they decided to push up his 'announcement' to today. This was all done to deflect suspicion about being a homo away from him. Now his re-election is in real trouble and they figured they'd play that card for the money and to try and shore up the base assholes of the DemonRat party! Won't do him any good though because we are going to CRUSH him November. Then he and Reggie can pack all the fudge they want!

What is to be gained by tearing into Obama over this? The only people opposed to gay marriage who will vote for Obama are Blacks. And they will vote for Obama even if he promoted
cannibalism. Tearing into Obama wins Romney not one more vote because if a voter is putting gay marriage as his personal third rail for voting, that voter isn’t listening to what’s happening here.

Blacks have told me that they do not like the gay rights movement, because they feel it dilutes the meaning of civil rights. They simply do not want to acknowledge a section of affluent white people as being discriminated against.

In their minds, people can see that they are black, so racists can easily find them and discriminate, but no one can tell that you are gay unless you open your mouth.

So this may seem like a risky move for keeping blacks, but in this election where else are they going to go? It would have been a risky move for a white president, because the black vote would have resisted it, but not so much for a black president.

I think you’re right. I was searching for a reason as to why Obama would throw this out there the day after his (evolved) interests got slammed in the same state he’s having the DNC convention at, but I think I was looking too hard.

It’s just another distraction from the hard facts about what an utter failure Obama is.

Hell, I imagine this isn’t going to help him much since homosexuals are going to see it as little more than political pandering for his reelection bid. Of course, they were going to vote for him anyway...
