Why the Health Nazis are on the March

They say “Jolly is the fat man,” but perhaps not when he’s being chased (and, I’m sure, caught) like a Frankenstein monster by the Body Cult crazies. And that is the case today, as it has become fashionable to affront the friendly-fronted.

It seems most anything goes now: bloated houses, bloated egos, bloated libidos, bloated bureaucracies, bloated government—except bloated bellies. And a perusal of the news makes this clear, with a never-ending stream of stories about obesity this and obesity that. For example, headlining Drudge the other day was a piece about how fathead officials in Massachusetts propose to ban school bake sales—even before and after school hours—to combat obesity. This, of course, is just the next step in a progression that has seen localities purge schools of cookies and sodas along with the faith and patriotism that was deemed unhealthful long before.

We also had the San Francisco Stupidvisors, who run the city (into the ground), who banned toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals. Deliciously, the restaurant chain circumvented the law by charging an extra ten cents for those who want the toy. I would’ve really rubbed the health Nazis’ noses in it and made it a penny.

Just don’t treat your diet as an idol.
Don’t forsake fellowship with others over your diet.

>>I post on several large fitness sites and most people who really take care of themselves, eat right and work out, I have found tend to be middle of the road or conservative. <<

AS you define conservative. Conservative in CA is not conservative in Georgia.

That’s all I’m saying.

"Enough is enough. Either we stand here, or we back up and punt again. Just like we did with the smokers... Look how that turned out. "

Careful what you wish for, it's not just power that our masters seek.
Cigarettes are (sort of) legal only because they are a source of government revenue, they are severely taxed.
Government has also latched onto gasoline and other hard to avoid commodities, check your 'phone bill.

Might be wise to enjoy those Oreos now before they come up with a 40% tax on "bad" foods and Crisco.

I’d rather do away with the bureaucracy that is running out of control.

If people want to do stupid sh*t to themselves, so be it. Don’t do it on my dime and don’t expect me to pony up my cash to fix you if you break yourself.

And yeah, it’s getting to the point where I’m willing to back that up with blood if need be.

Netmil,

Again, if I understand you correctly, you’re conflating anecdotal experiences with sound philosophy. Two people’s experiences may be different, and they both may be incorrect or correct. But this has nothing to do with what the truth of the matter is. And philosophy is the search for and expression of truth.

As for experiences, a child may encounter two mountain lions in his life, and neither may attack him. This doesn’t mean, though, that mountain lions aren’t dangerous animals.

I’m sorry if I struck a nerve. When the Bible talks about treating the body like a temple, I think it means don’t abuse your body with sin, like adultery, fornication, alcoholism, substance abuse, etc. I don’t think it means focusing a great deal of time or effort on physical fitness.

Doesn’t the Bible also say not to worry about what you eat or drink? It doesn’t seem scriptural to me to spend so much effort on trying to maintain the temple versus focusing on the spirit that resides in the temple. Christ certainly didn’t seem to spend much time dwelling on diet and exercise. I see diet and exercise can reach the point where it’s like the parable about the farmer who stored up his harvest. What good is a full harvest (or a super fit body) if tomorrow you die in a car crash?

Of course, you’re right that we all fall short by spending time on trivial things of this world rather than on the Lord’s work. I also agree we shouldn’t abuse our bodies. I try to eat responsibly and exercise on a regular basis. What we’re talking about are health Nazis who see diet and health as something more than that, and I’ll write it again, these are generally the same folks pushing irresponsible, unnatural, and unhealth sex, i.e. sodomy, and abortion.

I am always open to other opinions on scripture, btw, and don’t claim to have all the answers.

The Bible does indeed say the body is the temple for the Holy Spirit. Now what do you think the Holy Spirit is concerned about, a low cholesterol count or avoiding sin? I know a lot of churches that spend a great deal of time, money, and effort on maintaining beautiful buildings, too. Like the Bible says, where your treasure is, that's where your heart will be, too. And, btw, that's an admonition to myself to focus on worldly things less and spiritual things more. May the Lord forgive me.

Paladins Prayer: “We’re talking about the obsession with health and fitness that many people today exhibit.”

Exactly! BTW, you mistook another poster’s post for netmilsmom’s.

I do think there’s something evil going on in the world today that seems to be accelerating. People were interested in fitness decades ago, but this is different. For example, would you use fetal tissue to extend your life? I hope and pray I refuse that option if I’m ever presented with it, but I know many folks who would do nearly anything to extend their miserable existance for another day.

Some of this fitness stuff isn’t even rational. Like I wrote, these food Nazis freak out if Timmy brings a cupcake to school, but they have no problem telling Timmy it’s OK to sodomize his bud. It’s sick, and it seems to be getting worse.

It is also in Scripture that nothing that goes into a man’s body can defile him, but what comes out of his mouth can defile him indeed.

Anyway, the Health Nazis are acting according to the dictates of their own religion. Like Islam, it commands fanatical aggression against nonbelievers.

Start thinking like a Democrat! They need more tax money to buy votes and mansions. The tobacco industry is their model. Food is bad, so we must tax it to pay for the health problems and reduce the consumption. ... This is just another money-grab by the Democrats.

You're right. In addition, think about what is coming down the pike in a couple years. The full implementation of Obamacare. When rationing starts, as it inevitably will, progressives will use lifestyle choices to determine who gets care. If you are overweight, have diabetes or smoke, you will be denied care.
