Teamsters on Strike At (CT) Coca-Cola Bottling Plant
Hartford Courant ^

Workers represented by Teamsters Local 1035 went on strike Wednesday at 5 p.m. the Coca-Cola bottling plant on 471 Main St.

There are 357 workers on strike, including drivers, warehouse and bottling workers. "It's corporate greed at its worst," said Chris Roos, secretary-treasurer for Local 1035.

Health benefits, pay raises and job security are all sticking points, he said.

The men and women on the picket line wore T-shirts that said: "Coca-Cola give it back: $2.65."

Roos said, "We've taken $2.65 less in wages over the last five years," and said the company now wants employees to do cost sharing on their health insurance. He said the union wants either to maintain current health coverage, or get the $2.65 in raises.

Seven years ago, 348 Teamsters went on strike for five days, and won a contract that included 25 cents an hour for most of the years in the six and a half year contract and a 50-cent raise in the last year.

Let them walk and chant all they want. They/the Union made a conscious effort to walk off the job and should forfeit it.

I'm sure Coca-Cola would have no problem finding 357 unemployed people to work in the plant who would be more than happy to have to pay a portion of their health insurance and ideally no Union dues.

As opposed to non-shakedown Union activities?

Nah, as opposed to, say, SEIU shakedown activities.

You’re confusing KO the product
with CCE the bottling and distribution system

they split that business out in the 1980s
our Teamster “buddies” described here are CCEers.
That’s why I was confused by your comment.

Lol....When sales drop for the product your making and the company you work for isn’t making a profit and losing money...and they decide to cut 5% to save the %95...it’s suddenly corporate greed.

Don’t expect much reasoning ability from union members, if they were capable of such they’d not be in a union to start with.

Yeah, that makes sense. Smart move, when you think about it: spin the heavily unionized biz off. Don’t know how many teamsters work at KO, but it’s clearly the moneymaker.

Shut the plant, move operations to New Hampshire and claim the restricting liberali laws of the state are preventing us from making money and paying our union employees.
