Pastor Marvin Winans Carjacked at Detroit Gas Station
Fox2Detroit ^ | 5-16-2012 | Taryn Asher

Here is proof that no one is immune from the violence in Detroit. It turns out pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans is the city's latest crime victim. The reverend says he was roughed up at the gas pump. Thieves robbed him and then carjacked him. They're still on the streets with his luxury SUV.

He stopped at pump number one to refuel at the Citgo at Linwood and the Davison on the city's west side. Winans, founder on Detroit's Perfecting Church, walked inside the Citgo and noticed a dozen young men in the gas station's lobby.

As Pastor Winans walked back out to pump gas, three to four of the young men followed him to the pump.

Winans told police he was suspicious, so he watched the young men as his gas tank overflowed.

"He directed his attention back to the gas pump and was turning it off. At that time, a gentleman that was here at the gas station punched him from his blind side, knocking him to the ground. When he fell to the ground, a couple more guys intervened and started punching and kicking him while he was down. They then went into his pockets and took his wallet containing approximately $200 in cash and a few other personal items," said Inspector Nick Kyriacou.

The thieves drove off with Pastor Winans' 2012 burgundy Infiniti QX56. The SUV list price is $72,000. His $40,000 Presidential Rolex was also stolen.

His mom and deceased dad used to sing and his sister is a well known singer, CeCe. I didn’t read the article completely, was he riding through or is his church in Detroit?

If that’s a gentleman I’d hate to meet a roughman.

>>> "....and who in their right mind would pay $40,000 for a watch? " <<<

Good chance he didn't pay even close to that much.

Was a Navy Recruiter in Chicago in the '70's, at 114th & South Michigan Ave. Our office was a 'storefront' that opened up to the sidewalk.

Was a "gentleman" who would walk by every day just singing to the wind. Stopped in every day or so and asked if we "needed anything". This dude even took custom orders from people. "Want a new fridge in the box? What brand? Double door or single? How many cu ft? Ice maker? and the big one..... What Color? Said he could deliver in 3 or 4 days, $75 (or whatever) cash on delivery. I asked a beat cop about him one day........said the guy and his friends would go to the railroad yard and steal anything and everything he had orders for from box cars. Said you could depend on whatever you asked for. Got caught and arrested every few months....paid off the judge and walked.

Another story about him follows.

An interesting take on the story of Mary and the alabaster container. It’s more in a Sandi Patti style than the other one. Ce Ce wrote this herself? Not too bad.

I listened to it.... and hated it. Par for course with CeCe Winans voice & style of singing. I think that she & most of the megachurch sheisters & black divas are described in the Bible when they say, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in thy name?” And the Lord will say, Depart from me, I never knew you”.

If you want to come up with a valid theological critique of the lyrics, more power to you. She sees it as symbolizing her life. Others might see it as symbolizing Mary’s love. But I see absolutely nothing here deserving such opprobrium. What someone calls good music is so much a matter of taste. As a practicing musician of 40 years, being a church musician for the last 20 of them, I have to say I have gained a lot of perspective in the secular and sacred music realms.

Anyhow, yes the flashiness is in bad taste and probably not morally helpful either. St. Paul warned of women who looked hot but whose souls were (so to speak) cold towards God.

(follow up to my post 47):

Anyway....... This guy said he could always make quick cash by standing outside of Sears stores by the door. Always had a couple of men's and women's watches. Someone would get ready to walk in or out and he's whispers "want to buy a good watch?". If the person stopped and was interested he shows them one IN A SEARS BOX, always talking low and looking around, say's he would let it go for say $350. The person would hand him the $$$$ and the dude gave him the watch. Then, he would go to another door and start the routine again.

He explained to us that the sucker ASSUMED he had just walked out of Sears where he had stolen the watch, and, in this case, the watch must go for about $800 in the store. So, he buys for $350 and thinks he just got a super deal. Dude said what he would do is go in when he first got there and BUY 4 or 5 cheap watches for $25 - $30 each. Kept the receipt in case he got hassled by a cop ("who me...I just bought these and here's the receipt, officer. I'm just waiting here for my mama to finish shopping") He always bought the ones with the brand in small writing on the face or no brand showing. He would say it was a (name any expense brand) and not let them look too close. They would leave real quick because they didn't want a cop to catch the with the 'stolen' watch he had just bought.

I don’t think she wrote it, actually I don’t know who wrote it.

I did like when her mom and dad song. They are called mom and pop winan. The dad has something special when he song, not so much the voice but the spirit - well, I felt that way but I did enjoy ‘seeing’ them sing. Not hearing but seeing them. I think the mom is beautiful even after having 10 kids and in her 70’s or something like that, not sure. Never heard the guy that got mugged sing - never interested me enough to find out.

Just watch an episode of “Hard Core Pawn” on Cable.

It will show you everything you need to know about Detroit and the Obama supporters who live there. Scary stuff.

Oops you are referring to her rendition of the Fanny Crosby classic. Well can’t fault the lyrics there at all. Who cares if a punk rock group grunts it out to screaming guitars? The message cannot be mistaken. Puh-leeze.

Usually the lyrics websites credit the song writers. For this one, nobody is mentioned but Ce Ce. She probably penned it herself. I don’t see any other artist featuring it.

As a practicing musician of 40 years, being a church musician for the last 20 of them,

Nice! Impressive!

I appreciate music but couldn't tell if someone hit a sour note or not. I found that at when my daughter was taking piano lessons at seven. I would say how nice, that sounds good. Once she grew up she told me, she hated when I said that because she thought I was just saying it to make her play - she told me she was making mistakes and in the background there I was saying that sounds nice, blah blah. Then she found out that I really didn't 'heard/know' it.

But when things come naturally how do you understand something that is so obvious to you that another can't hear it. She did give it up, her teacher was unhappy saying she really is a natural but... the piano sits untouched (except for dusting) after all these years. I'm just happy we didn't get an expensive one, however, it was expensive for us at the time. And that's my music story from someone with non musical ear.

I grew from R&R to country to gospel to worship. Favorite worship is Terry Mac Almon.

And yours will be “Lord, Lord, didn’t I judge in Your Name when I really didn’t know a flip about CeCe and others”? And God will say, let me tell you about my child Cece...

I think it more appropriate to ask “What father of a million-selling R&B star DOESN’T drive a $72,000 vehicle?”
The good pastor raised some very talented kids and I’m sure they bless him in many ways. Got no problem with it.

I had no idea who his kids are...still don’t, but I appreciate the information. That explains the dollar value of what was taken.
