Poll: Berg leads Heitkamp in U.S. Senate race (7 points ahead in ND)

The first independent poll of North Dakota’s contested U.S. Senate race shows Republican Rep. Rick Berg has a slim lead over his Democratic opponent six months before the general election.

A Forum Communications Co. poll of 500 likely voters statewide found 51 percent would choose Berg over Democrat Heidi Heitkamp if the general election were held at the time of the survey, conducted May 3 to May 8 by Essman/Research of Des Moines, Iowa.

Heitkamp received 44 percent of likely voters’ support, while 5 percent were still undecided.

The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

A Berg-Heitkamp contest appears to be the most realistic general election match-up, since the poll also indicated Berg should handily win the contested Republican primary next month.

The poll found 65 percent of Republicans statewide planned to vote for Berg in the June 12 primary, while 21 percent would vote for his unendorsed challenger, Duane Sand.

Fourteen percent of those surveyed were undecided at the time of the survey.

What is happening in North Dakota? Obama is highly unpopular there. Are the state Republican Party’s Federal candidates really that bad?

7% is a SLIM lead ? I guess only if you’re a Republican according to the leftist media.

7 pts is a "slim lead?" And does anyone really believe the above, in a conservative state like ND that 21% would vote for the Dem? Of course I guess Kent Conrad got elected over and over so who knows?

Berg’s “unendorsed” primary challenger, Duane Sand, is a conservative Republican, not a Dem.

Thanks for the info. I thought they were referring to the Dem.

From what I’ve heard, Berg has generated some negative press over using spending a lot of money on franking privileges, hence why the polls don’t show him blowing away Heitkamp.

Ethanol subsidies, farm subsidies, rural development subsidies, indian reservations... North Dakota has been on the federal teet for a long time. Our former congressional delegation, two Dem senators and one Dem representative, have had an easy time over the past 30 years buying votes. Only since 2010 have we had Republican representation. Only since then have we had someone appeal to the conservative nature of the people here. Berg will win, but he has to walk a tightrope where he promises fiscal responsibility but also can't be painted as being hostile to the "family farmer" which is some sort of holy being here.

Cramer leads her 61-23! and Kalk 48-31.

Looks like Last Dakotan was right, no one has even heard of this “surprisingly strong” rat house candidate. Her success has been at raising money, clearly she needs it.
