Son: Libyan convicted in Lockerbie bombing is dead
By LEE KEATH and RAMI AL-SHAHEIBI | Associated Press 5 mins ago
BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer who was the only person ever convicted in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, died Sunday nearly three years after he was released from a Scottish prison to the outrage of the relatives of the attack's 270 victims. He was 60.
Scotland released al-Megrahi on Aug. 20, 2009, on compassionate grounds to let him return home to die after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. At the time, doctors predicted he had only three months to live.

After his release, he kept a strict silence, living in the family villa surrounded by high walls in a posh Tripoli neighborhood, mostly bedridden or taking a few steps with a cane. Libyan authorities sealed him off from public access. When the one-year anniversary of his release passed, some who visited him said al-Megrahi bitterly mused that the world was rooting for him to die.

Far past time that this happened.
But it should have been on a gallows...or on the receiving end of a hell fire missile.

Thanks Libloather.
I cannot forget that a year or two after the bombing a number of articles appeared in the Sunday Times and other papers indicating that the terror action had been carried out by Palestinian groups (PFLP-GC was specifically mentioned) connected to Syria and Iran. It seemed as clear cut a case as you can get In the murky world of spies and terrorists at the time, and the State Dept was supposed to bring pressure on Syria.
But then Saddam invaded Kuwait, Mrs Thatcher performed the first ever back-bone transplant on a living President, and Syria suddenly became an ally in the war against Iraq.
Post-Gulf War I Baker and Bush Sr pushed the MidEast negotiations in Madrid where Syria was one of the pivotal partners. B & B could hardly force Shamir to carry out negotiations with a party that was responsible for one of the most dreadful terror attacks on the West (prior to 911), and the Syria track disappeared down the memory hole.
It is true that in late 2003 Libya acknowledged some sort of responsibility for the Lockerbie tragedy, but by that time US forces were in Baghdad, Saddam was on the run, and Libya was doing its utmost to get on the good side of the US government.
Ping to my post #6.
About time.
Thanks ScaniaBoy.
The “compassionate” part of his release was that they cut him loose from the European socialized medicine web where men have 1/5 the chance of surviving prostate cancer than in America and probably in Libya.
Hope he asked Jesus to forgive his bloody lifestyle before he crossed over
death from cancer or “other” causes??
He did work for Gadaffi you know! And we know how his henchmen have been making out under the new order.
The people who overthrew Gaddafi cheered the Lockerbie bombing...they were on board with Gaddafi until he renounced terrorism when Bush was in the White House.
“..The people who overthrew Gaddafi cheered the Lockerbie bombing...”
didn’t all of the Muslim world cheer??
Pretty much.
