MILLER: Iraq vet brutalized over guns in D.C.
The Washington Times ^ | 23 May, 2012 | Emily Miller

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) seems to have it out for our military. The department is using the city’s pointless firearm registration mandate to harass, arrest and jail servicemen.

Army 1st Sergeant Matt Corrigan was woken in the middle of the night, forced out of his home, arrested, had his home ransacked, had his guns seized and was thrown in jail -- where he was lost in the prison system for two weeks -- all because the District refuses to recognize the meaning of the Second Amendment. This week, the city dropped all charges against Sgt. Corrigan, but the damage done to this reservist cannot be so easily erased.

This story will describe how Sgt. Corrigan went from sleeping at home at night to arrested. Subsequent installments of the series will cover the home raid without a warrant, the long-term imprisonment and the coverup by MPD.

Sgt. Corrigan, 35, and his attorney Richard Gardiner appeared before Judge Michael Ryan at D.C. Superior Court on Monday. The District’s assistant attorney general moved to dismiss all ten charges against him - three for unregistered firearms and seven for possession of ammunition in different calibers.

Wearing a blue suit and black-rimmed glasses, Sgt. Corrigan looked unemotional after the hearing that ended his two-year ordeal. Outside the courtroom, I asked him how he felt. I expected some vindication or, at least, relief. Instead, he was weighed down by the losses and trauma of the experience. “For court, I put on a face showing I’m okay,” he said. “Overall, this has broken me.”

Nighttime Raid

Sgt. Corrigan was asleep in rented apartment on North Capitol Street in the Stonghold neighborhood at 4am on Feb. 3, 2010, when he heard his name being called on a bullhorn from outside.

This is likely to have a chilling effect on veterans using the hotline.

But they're from the government and they're here to help you...

Seems like the person on the other end of the phone had her mind made up and wouldn't listen to him in the first place, likely tipping off the police with what her preconceived notions were of the situation.

That is the situation everyone would want to avoid, and it isn't very likely that someone who isn't listening in the first place is going to be a lot of help.

10+ years ago, terrorists attacked America. Now the government does the terrorist’s work, so they don’t have to.

Pure evil.

I have to quit thinking in terms of “coming police state” and accept we are in the “present police state”. I don’t know if Waco was the start of it or long before, but we live in a police state that would make the founders disband organized police nationwide and go back to volunteers.

Evil. Criminal. Despicable. I have always been pro LEO, but the constant reminders of night time no-knock raids, dog shootings, DUI checkpoints, the TSA and other police oppression has me wondering how soon the LEO community will become an enemy of the state, if it isn’t already.

Nothing but family is as important as my freedom and I don’t feel very free.

if you hear your name shouted on a bullhorn at 4 AM, detonate the outward facing Claymores hidden in your bushes, then retreat to your bunker and fight to the death.

Or call your lawyer and don’t let them in until he arrives, I can’t decide which!

The LEO community is just an arm of the state; the state has become an enemy of the people.

This is likely to have a chilling effect on veterans using the hotline.

There is no situation so bad, that it cannot be made worse by involving a government employee.

I've had two situations, one involving my mom when she was getting senile, and one involving my daughter when she had an anxiety attack. Once you are in their system, they will be relentless in involving you deeper and deeper. Never, EVER, communicate any issues to a governmental, or government-financed, organization if there is a private or church-related organization that you can go to instead.

I guess HIPPA doesn’t apply to the VA.

Agreed. Freedom isn't free! This vet paid a high price, luckily not the ultimate price, will the rest of us take note and action?

...for possession of ammunition in different calibers.

It is a separate offense in D.C. to possess ammunition in caliber different from that of guns that you have registered.

If you have a .38, and you possess .22 ammunition, you have committed a crime. If you have no firearms registered, and possess any ammunition, you have committed a crime.

D.C. still does not have enough restrictions to meet the anti-gun crowd definition of "common sense gun laws".

This story is a disgrace. This country is a disgrace. I have overeducated public health relatives who would hang the 1st Sgt on a PC noose.

Like I said. This country is a disgrace. Not worth saving. In my youth I joined the Army to defend the free world. This was a mistake my children won’t make. I won’t lift a finger or shed a drop of blood to defend this Empire.

I would die to defend our Constitution. The Constitution is dead. USA is not worth saving.

I personally take offence at your last sentence!

As long as any one of us draws a breath, the USA will be worth saving at whatever cost.

DC is not the USA and I too would not lift a finger to save it.

United States of America is predicated on the social contract of the Constitution. Without the Constitution no United States exists.

My public health relatives live and work in Texas. They too, like the VA hot line operator will “burn down the village to save it”. My relatives work in a school district and will bring down the hot holy hell of Texas officialdom if they think you are in need of saving.

The Byzantine Empire finally collapsed after the citizens decided it just wasn’t worth saving. We are reaching that point here. We are a confederation of people at odds with each other. It won’t last.

True. Our masters are our enemies. They sure aren’t looking out for our welfare anymore, if they ever did. But yes, it is getting bad. They are really destroying our liberty and prosperity.
