The Vetting: Obama Decried 'Spread of Militarism,' Lauded Anti-Selective Service Group at Columbia

In late 2008—long after the election—the media revealed a long-forgotten article written by Barack Obama while at Columbia. Obama wrote the March 1983 article, “Breaking the War Mentality,” about two campus groups, Arms Race Alternatives (ARA) and Student Against Militarism (SAM). Ben Smith of Politico (now at Buzzfeed) told readers that Obama’s views reflected the “very conventional campus liberalism of the time.”

Wrong. Smith and the media failed to investigate what the activists at SAM were actually doing: encouraging students to break the law by not registering for the Selective Service and harassing military recruiters.

Obama wrote that SAM “was formed in response to the passage of the registration laws in 1980.” Obama noted that the activists had “fostered awareness and practical action necessary to counter the growing threat of war.” That “awareness” and “practical action” went beyond mere protest, or encouraging students to break the law. SAM also wanted to break the military itself by sapping it of support—as Obama must have known from contemporaneous articles in the Columbia Spectator and from campus politics.

SAM’s most serious form of political activism, however, was encouraging students not to register for the Selective Service. Refusing to register for the Selective Service could mean arrest, imprisonment, and—most importantly—denial of federal student aid. SAM counseled Columbia’s estimated 400 non-registrants and tried to form them into a political force on campus. The non-registrant’s “refusal to register seems to reflect more of an abstract repulsion to war and violence than any political opposition to the American political system,” wrote Julius Genachowski for the Spectator on November 29, 1982 (later Obama’s classmate at Harvard Law School, and his appointee to lead the Federal Communications Commission). “But they are nevertheless acutely aware that a peaceful world would require a restructuring of that system

Yup......the next big thing in the Vett-O-Sphere. His number is bogus. I never quite bought the BC deal, but the SSS# fraud is easier to prove.

There are some Obama conspiracies that never make it past the common sense test. (Elaborate deceptions with little or no political advantage.) This one, however, has always been plausible. While I haven't been terribly impressed with the evidence I've seen so far, the idea that the radical college student version of Obama would either ignore registering for the SS, or refuse to do it out of some kind of misguided protest is very believable. And beyond that, when it was time to take his political career more seriously, I've no doubt there are some Dem Party fixers who could “clean up” these small issues...under the radar...some of the same folks who realized there was a literary agent with a "born in Kenya" book idea from the Prez hisownself.

Even if elected officials are technically exempt, it makes the man look like the shirker he is. And my criticism comes from someone who was actively anti-war in my college days, asked for (and received) a conscientious objector status (1-A-O), fought the draft for 3 years and when I finally failed to stop the draft letter, reluctantly went in to serve (US Army Medical Corps). Here's the extra weird part of the deal: the only 2-year period of my adult life in which I never handled a firearm was my two years in the US Army.

Obama's signature on his 1980s Selective Service form that we see on the internet: To me, his signature is so different from his signature of today.

It looks like someone else signed Obama's signature.

I know that many people's signatures change as they get older, but, Obama's signature on the Selective Service form is so different from his signature of today that it looks to me like someone other than Obama signed that 1980s form.

I wish that we could find a sample of Obama's signature from high school and college so that we could compare his high school and college signature to his signature on his Selective Service form.

That is, if Obama's signature in high school and college looks like his signature of today and not like his signature on his 1980s Selective Service form, then we know that somebody else signed Obama's name to Obama's 1980s Selective Service form.

hmmmm...so let’s say Obama was born in Hawaii, like he NOW says he was.

And then - in order to make up for bad grades and too much Choom fun, he invents his Kenyan birth as a route to piles of cash reserved for “foreign” students.

So then he doesn’t register with Selective Service - either out of protest, or because he has self-identified as “foreign”.

Later on he has to fix the fact that a)he never registered w/ SS and B)he never applied for SS number.

And now we are left with 2 possibilities.
1) Obama told the truth the first time - that he was born in Kenya. He is ineligible for office;has committed a gazillion acts of fraud, and should be charged with crimes.

or

2)He was born in Hawaii and committed a gazillion acts of fraud to gain access to funds he was not entitled to. Later he commits a gazillion acts of fraud to cover it up.
He should be charged with crimes.
