~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama

Maxwell Air Force Base, officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, is a United States Air Force installation under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The installation is located in Montgomery, Alabama, US. It was named in honor of Atmore, Alabama native Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell.

Maxwell AFB is the headquarters of Air University (AU), a major component of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education (PME). The host wing for Maxwell-Gunter is the 42nd Air Base Wing (42 ABW). The 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) is a tenant activity and the only operational flying wing at Maxwell.

Under Air University are three principal schools that provide various levels of Joint Professional Military Education (JPME). The first is Squadron Officer School (SOS), a nearly 2 month program oriented towards First Lieutenants and Captains in the Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

The second, Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) is a year long program for Air Force officers (to include Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard), Department of Defense civil servants in the grade of GS-13, as well as select officers from other U.S. and Allied armed forces in the rank of Major, Lieutenant Commander, Squadron Leader or equivalent. ACSC is considered "intermediate" level JPME.

The third program, Air War College (AWC) is also a year long program and selects students from the same sources as ACSC, but the minimum rank for attendance rises to Lieutenant Colonel, Commander, Wing Commander or equivalent or DoD civil servants in the grade of GS-14. AWC is considered "senior" level JPME.

Maxwell AFB also hosts the Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools (AFOATS), which has oversight for two of the Air Force's three officer commissioning programs, Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), which is headquartered at Maxwell and Air Force Officer Training School (OTS), which is headquartered and conducted at Maxwell AFB, having relocated from Lackland AFB, Texas in the 1990s.

Capitalizing on the new facilities built for OTS in the 1990s, Maxwell is now the only base hosting the annual fall/spring semester and summer Field Training (FT) encampments for AFROTC cadets that they must attend before commissioning. The Civil Air Patrol's corporate and joint CAP-USAF headquarters is also located at Maxwell.

LOL, mine too. Dark Hollow was downtown club below the street level. a real dark hollow and a favorite night spot for many of the guys at Maxwell & Gunter. The band played there, but also at the NCO clubs at both bases, and other places around Monkey town. (Those were my pre-committed Christian days & I mostly try to forget them). Great to “touch base” with someone who was in the same place at the same time. I find it to be a small world.

... downtown club below the street level ...

Sounds a lot like a place called "Quinn's" or something like that. It was an after hours club, everyone had to register on the way in, and no one used their real name. I was probably known to them as just another "John Smith".

Thanks. It is a POA park and facility ranger job. I think I’ll really like to do that type of work and meet more of the local folks.

Thanks. I start training tomorrow. Just enough for some extra spending money, but it’s a job for now.

That’s basically why I work because I only get 20-25 hours a week. It keeps me “in the loop” as it were! :)

You’ll do good!

Hi, Ma!

I went to Gunter for training in TAS (Tool Accountability System). A computerized system of assigned ID numbers and bar codes creating basically a $10.000 Clip Board to allocation and recovery for tools, kits, small parts and hardware.

The Kids are doing well. One of the three Midnight Kittens from late last year has a roly-poly, tawny, black striped kitten of her own now. The back yard is fairly free of moles and moles and other rodents.

No, not Quinns. I can’t recall the street it was on (30+years), but there was no registering at the Dark Hollow. Our bouncer was a Montgomery Policeman and two members of the band were also cops. The place behaved itself. Saw the bouncer haul many a drunk up the stairs across his shoulder. He would lay them down on the sidewalk outside the door, LOL. Inside the club was all black with luminus glowing hillbilly characters painted on the walls. We did some serious Bluegrass down there. Lots of redneck hoopin and hollerin.
