MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) A 15-year-old Coon Rapids student says he wears a rosary as a necklace to feel close to his grandmother, who is suffering from breast cancer. But the Anoka-Hennepin School District told him to take the rosary off or face the consequences.
Jake Balthazor says he prays for his grandmothers health.
She has breast cancer, and Im trying to support her for it, he said.
He wears his beliefs proudly. The rosary is one his grandmother gave him, but its also what landed him in the principals office.
They think its like a gang sign, Balthazor said.
A district spokesperson said the school asked Balthazor not to wear the rosary as a necklace again, saying policy forbids it.
The districts student discipline policy forbids any apparel, jewelry, accessories, or matter of grooming which by virtue of its color arrangement, trademark, or any other attribute (as a primary purpose) denotes membership in an organized gang.

The Catholic Church is now a "gang"?
Does that make the Knights of Columbus a "militia"?
These people need to clean the sight glass in their navels, just so they can see where they are walking.
This is just plain crazy
Yep...won’t be long and there will a rumble between the “Micks” and the crips
You said it.
I would really like to see the Church send in a high official and its lawyers to this school and school district. If the church doesn’t start to fight back it will find that it has lost what respect it still has.
And in the end all of the church’s may become mosques in the end because they didn’t stand up and proudly proclaim their beliefs.
I feel for the young man and his loss, yet even if for the wrong reason, the school is correct in asking the young man to remove the Rosary Beads. I teach in a CATHOLIC SCHOOL, and we do NOT allow the wearing of Rosary Beads. They are NOT an adornment. They are to be used for prayer and prayer alone and it is against the teachings of the Catholic Church to wear them. That said, unfortunately, they have become a gang symbol for many local hoods. Either way, we do NOT allow it. I’m sure the school on question is doing this based strictly on political correctness and the bogus notion of the separation of church and state, but however inadvertant, they are actually right.
Would this be considered as being a "Gang Symbol?"
As a Catholic, I don’t like this rosary wearing that is going on right now anyway. The rosary is not for wearing!!!!!
It's those swords, you know.
Just wear the rosary under his shirt and nobody will know and he can honor his grandmother. How hard is that?
citation please?

Well said.
"Hail! Hail! The gang's all here."
I personally think that the teachers union is also a gang and should not be allowed in ANY school.
It’s disrespectful to wear them. His grandmother would be the first to tell him that. If he truly wants it as a reminder, keep it in his pants pocket. Unfortunately, the rosary is becoming a fashion statement for Hollywood celebs and gangmembers alike. Good for the school. It’s not an issue of religious freedom.
Yet how foolish. They in their abject moronic atheism can never grasp that they shall never, ever succeed.
“That said, unfortunately, they have become a gang symbol for many local hoods.”
Could you give any sources? Not that I am at all familiar with the world of Big Sh*tty, Urban Feral habitat and the assorted, sordid, denizens therein. I am just somewhat surprised that social predators would use a religious symbol as an insignia.
