Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) declared on the Senate floor Thursday that the debate over whether humans are causing climate change is over, and that it has been shown conclusively that human activity is leading to global warming.
"People say there are questions about the theory," he said. "No, there are not.
"The argument that the jury is still out on climate change is a false and bogus argument," he added. "The jury is not out. In fact, the jury is in, the effects are obvious, they surround us every day, and we need to take action."
Whitehouse said the theory that warmth creates a moist atmosphere that traps heat has been around since the Civil War. "That's been basic textbook science for a century," he said. "It's never been controverted. It's a law, essentially, of science."

Even the most radical studies indicate that human activity contributes to global warming, but is not the primary source. In short, he's a liar!
Um, yes, because a lawyer is *so* qualified to read actual studies and discern the difference between those based on pure speculation (i.e., which say that "if global warming continues, we can expect disastrous results") and those which actually investigate whether mechanisms exist to link human activity to global climate, and how much of an effect those mechanisms have. Speculative papers abound, as do those which present study results and include a throw-away statement about how their results can be partially explained by global warming. The abundance of such papers does not establish human contribution to global climate; it establishes that politicians who control the grant money influence researchers to link their studies (of legitimate topics) to climate change research.
I've yet to see a paper that actually addresses whether the proposed mechanism of global warming (that the broad fluorescence band that CO2 exhibits within the IR portion of the electromagnetic spectrum increases the total energy content of the atmosphere) really has a significant effect.
Look at all the soot and pollution that is pouring into the atmosphere, endangering the health of children and the elderly , that is solely the cause of greedy Forest Service bureaucrats and their enviro running dog lackeys who insist that we cannot cut trees anywhere.
A simple question to you Senator Whitehouse about settled law. When you voted to pass the Health Care Reform law, did you read it? Yep, I know it was 2,000 pages plus, but isn’t that your job?
Just a simple question.
What is a "cosmic" cause?
Anybody who believes "the science is settled" isn't fit to comment on scientific issues. The science is never settled , it is an evolving state of understanding.
The sun had a minor hiccup yesterday, sending a massive CME toward Earth, Venus, and Mars. there’s a 65% chance of a class M flare. Spaceweather.com predicts that some of Earth’s atmosphere will be torn away.
I’ll believe in manmade global warming when Algore moves inland from his coastal CA home, when the coastal cities of NY, DC, SF, LA, Houston, Miami etc are relocated to Kansas.
Too bad ignorance isn’t painful.
Was it a “law, essentially, of science” back when they were saying that GLOBAL COOLING was the problem?
What is it with Statists and their impulse to rewrite history?
A few decades ago it was GLOBAL COOLING - and humans were definitely to blame - especially capitalism.
Now it is GLOBAL WARMING - and humans are definitely to blame - especially capitalism.
Things are still not as warm as the Medieval warm period - which was a fine time all around.
Let me know when they are growing wine grapes in England again.
Until then...... go urinate up a rope Congressman.
I assume this idiot will release his science grades - starting from 8th grade through college...

Looks like he also believes in ObamaCare... yep, we all need to get in line behind this one... /s
[singing] Hey you, Whitehouse, ha ha, charade you are.
Thanks Free ThinkerNY. That’s Sheldon Whitehouse, all.
Global Warming on Free Republic
Senator has no idea how big the world is, and he must be an atheist to think that we have any control over it at all.
His world is the size of his own tiny mind.
And “bogus?” Really, Senator? “Bogus?” Did you just graduate from high school?
Eloquently put, senator.
That's rich, especially when considered together with a story (perhaps urban legend, it's hard to believe anyone is this ignorant, even a liberal) about a meeting between some kind of industry leaders and Obama staffers right after the inauguration. According to the story the industry guys told the Obama guys that what they wanted to do was impossible because it would violate the laws of physics -- and the Obama guys look at each other and make a note to work on getting those laws changed!
So laws of science that work to advance the power of collectivist liberals are immutable; all others are subject to change!
Well, the current crap of politicians is driving ME nuts, so apparently, yeah.
It used to be. If you were a bad farmer your family wouldn't do very well. Today we reward ignorance.
Cut them some slack, they’re only repeating what their Ive League professors told them.
Only idiots like you and me do not understand that more borrowing and more spending are the only solutions to a borrowing and spending problem.
