Some 17 million Evangelicals failed to vote in 2008 when Democrat Barack Obama beat the GOP's John McCain — and now the fight is on to get them there this November, Faith and Freedom Coalition founder Ralph Reed says.
And the coalition's conference going on in Washington, D.C., this weekend is a training ground to get that vote out, he told Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.
GOP leaders including Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are addressing the conference this weekend as they try to ensure a high turnout namong Evangelicals, Catholics, conservative Independents and tea party supporters.
“We had, in 2008, about 17 million self-identified Evangelicals who didn’t go to polls either because they weren’t registered to vote or because they were registered but they didn’t bother,” Reed said.
“And we don’t know if we can get all 17 million of them to go to the polls, but we can get millions of them registered to vote and turned out. So this weekend we’re going to be talking to them about the basic blocking and tackling of registering people to vote, making sure they’re educated on where the candidates stand and getting them out to the polls on election day.”
November's election is critical, Reed said, because President Barack Obama is “somebody who’s called for more government, more spending, more bureaucracy. He seems to think the answer to everything that ails America is more government and bigger government.”
Reed also said he believes the Obama administration is engaged in an attack on religious freedom.

Now they tell us the Evangelicals hold the key to victory because there are 17 million of them who didn't bother voting last time ~ some problem with the candidates I suppose.
Well, that sort of thing is best dealt with by obtaining a suitable candidate ~ at least if you want to win.
I"m just guessing here but it looks like the GOP-e has no interest in winning this time either.
They might look to that problem too ~ this lack of interest in winning. Just ask themselves why they are even in politics if they don't want to win.
I certainly hope so.

If you want to capture those Evangelical votes, put a person on the ballot who has lived in such a way as to demonstrate that they share those Evangelical values. What is so hard to understand here?
The trend toward Evangelical and Catholic coalitions in politices is encouraging.

Delegates Heading to Tampa Sue the GOP

The federal lawsuit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in California demands the delegates be freed to “vote their conscience” for presidential nominee at the party’s August national convention in Tampa, Fla., rather than being “bound” to vote for a certain candidate, as many state party bylaws require, based on the primary elections and other delegate selection procedures. Courthouse News Service reports at least another 40 additional national convention delegates have asked to join the lawsuit which would bring the total to 160 Delegates.
The courts have typically allowed political parties leeway in the nomination of their candidates, but this case asks the court to consider the choice of presidential nominee a “federal election,” subject to laws that would free delegates from party procedures to vote their conscience. Beyond merely asserting delegates’ “right” to vote their conscience, however, the lawsuit asserts the GOP has engaged in a racketeering-like scheme to push Romney as the candidate.
“The Republican National Committee and its chairman have been aiding the Governor Romney campaign for at least six months,” the lawsuit asserts. “The RNC and its chairman, defendant Reince Priebus, have … combined with a particular candidate with all of the aid the RNC can possibly, but improperly give … to obstruct, intimidate and harass delegates from voting their conscience.”
Specifically, the lawsuit charges Republican officials and operatives have used threats of violence, certified unlawful slates of delegates, demanded affidavits of loyalty to Romney under penalty of perjury and have even altered ballot results to make sure the national convention is stacked with delegates who will vote for Romney
“Some campaigns act like organized crime syndicates – and I mean organized crime, no doubt about it,” Gilbert told Courthouse News. “In Arizona, the voting machines were rigged so that Ron Paul votes were counted as Mitt Romney votes. It was so intentional that a Romney delegate refused to certify the vote count, and for that, he got thrown off the convention.”
The plaintiffs are asking the court to order the RNC to inform delegates they can vote for the nominee of their choice, to reinstate delegates who lost their seats at the convention because they refused to sign loyalty affidavits and to recount ballots by hand or hold another convention in areas “where the sanctity of the ballots are untrustworthy.”
Plus 18 million Catholic voters and it’s all over for The One.
They want us to sell our soul for another devil. Some people don’t understand when they vote for someone who enacts/creates/signs sinful laws abortion/gay marriage/adoption/forces 5 yr olds to be indoctrinated into the gay agenda, THEY PERSONALLY are giving that person the POWER to do those evil things. We will all answer one day for our votes. Some people want romney so much they are willing to throw away their principals. I know they hate obama and the earth is going to end if he’s re-elected. Many republicans are acting just like the democrats, vote for the party and don’t look at character.
I am hoping Romney’s pick for VP will give me a reason to vote for the ticket, rather than just a reason to vote against ubama.
He won their vote last time.

I don’t recall saying keeping Obama for four more years was a good thing. How odd that you got that from my post.
“We have to elect him to see what’s in him” seems to be the current philosophy of the hold-your-nose-for-Romney crowd. That type of thinking worked so well for Obamacare, which of course was patterned after Romneycare, as Obama himself pointed out.
Yes, I agree...doing the right thing is always best. That is why I will be voting for neither Obama nor Romney.
I fear God much more than I fear Romney or Obama.
If 17 million evangelicals had a similar intestinal fortitude, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion. In fact, we wouldn’t have Obama in the first place.
I certainly hope so.
