Anti-cocaine vaccine described in Human Gene Therapy Journal

A single-dose vaccine capable of providing immunity against the effects of cocaine offers a novel and groundbreaking strategy for treating cocaine addiction is described in an article published Instant Online in Human Gene Therapy, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. (http://www.liebertpub.com) The article is available free online at the Human Gene Therapy website (http://www.liebertpub.com/hum).

"This is a very novel approach for addressing the huge medical problem of cocaine addiction," says James M. Wilson, MD, PhD, Editor-in-Chief, and Director of the Gene Therapy Program, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Philadelphia.

In the article "AAVrh.10-Mediated Expression of an Anti-Cocaine Antibody Mediates Persistent Passive Immunization That Suppresses Cocaine-Induced Behavior," (http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/hum.2011.178) a team of researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College (New York, NY), The Scripps Research Institute (La Jolla, CA), and Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) used a virus-based delivery vehicle in mice to transfer a gene that produces a protein capable of binding to cocaine present in the blood, preventing the cocaine from crossing into the brain. The protein is a monoclonal antibody that sequesters cocaine, making the vaccinated mice resistant to the drug's effects. Whereas unvaccinated mice exhibited hyperactivity when exposed to intravenous cocaine, the immunized mice showed no effects, according to authors Jonathan Rosenberg, et al. BHR Pharma Expands SyNAPSe® Trial into Thailand, China and Russia

A corporate presser's tile neglects to give a hint at the study: progesterone as an immunomodulator for traumatic brain injury. It's plausible.

FReepmail me if you want on or off my combined microbiology/immunology ping list.

Tell that to hard core blowheads.

Addicts are born not made. Most cocaine addicts also use other substances like alcohol, marijuana, opiates or amphetamine. If they can't get high on cocaine they'll get drunk or shoot some pills or buy a dose of methadone. Where I live most of the crack addicts seem to bounce around between crack, booze and oxycontin. Fifteen or 20 years ago they came out with opioid antagonists to treat opiate addicts. These drugs blocked the opioid receptors in the brain denying the user the effects of heroin, morphine, etc. This probably falls in the category of aversion therapy. There were some unforeseen consequences: if the patient suffered some traumatic injury like in a car wreck traditional pain killers would have no affect; some addicts, despite the antagonist, would shoot dope until their lungs shut down.

But if this new drug will treat brain injuries it's probably still a miracle considering the casualties still coming from Afghanistan.

In rural Alaska we have "dry" villages.

Every plane in is searched for drugs and alcohol making it nearly impossible to import illicit substances.

The children in those villages die from sniffing gasoline from the tanks of snow machines, 4wheelers and chain saws to get high.

[In rural Alaska we have “dry” villages. The children in those villages die from sniffing gasoline. . .]

I wasn't around for Prohibition but I've read a lot of people went blind and died from rotgut booze. I worked in medium security prisons for three years. I knew one inmate who built a huge debt buying drugs from the gangs. He was moved into protective custody—the most secure section of the prison. Despite that, he was able to obtain some prison liquor distilled from fruit mash. (I never tasted any but was told it can be quite good, like brandy). Whoever made this batch used a homemade heating element made from aluminum. This created a toxin which killed the kid in PC and poisoned some other inmates.

Addicts are born not made.

As a addict recovering from many addictions, I can testify to the truth of that.

I must be very careful as I can become addicted to most anything. I thank God for helping me manage this. Could not do it without His help.

I'll always be an addict. The trick is keeping the desires under control. Not easy sometimes.

End the stupid WOD and let nature take its course

If you have an addictive gene and don't stay away from the booze coke etc etc then enjoy yourself while you can but don't ask for help when the solution is don't take the stuff

You won't die without it

Majority of Mormons seem to do OK without even coffee or caffeine sodas
