NASHVILLE -- As many as 5,000 people were evacuated on Tuesday night after an explosion at the Opryland Hotel and Convention Center in Nashville -- where hundreds of the nation's sheriffs are attending a conference.
The blast occurred in a mechanical room at the convention center about 8:30pm local time, WSMV-TV reported, adding that no injuries had been reported.
The convention center suffered significant damage from the blast and a Nashville Fire Department spokesperson told the station there was a smell of natural gas in the area. Gas was switched off in the building as officials responded to the scene.

I am surprised this hasn’t gotten more attention. It came on the news last night, and it was pointed out that sheriffs were there for a conference. It was no small explosion as ceiling tiles were falling and one eye witness said walls and ceiling were damaged, as was an escalator.
This is a really big room, and if the explosion happened in a mechanical room it must have been significant to damaged the room where people were. 5000 people were evacuated from the building!!! That’s a lot of evacuation!

My first thought was perhaps that former DEA agent who shot himself in the foot with his Glock in front of a classroom of students might have been since hired by the BATFE and was at this convention demonstrating his expertise with bombs.
To paraphrase his comment before he shot himself in the foot:
“I am the only one in this room qualified to handle this - BOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!”

This is a lie. I was there. I was a guest of one of the sheriff's attending the Association's conference and seminars. We were all up stairs in a reception when the blast occurred. It was a huge blast that shook the building to the foundation. The windows rattled to the point of breaking.
There was no immediate alarms in our area. The explosion was three floors below us. This was in what they call the Delta area of the hotel. When the word came to evacuate the area, we all started down the stairs and we came out right above where the blast was. There was a lot of smoke rising up to the glass roof of the large open area there and it smelled of CORDITE, not natural gas. The smell was that of a mass of fireworks that had gone off and the smell of smoke that burns your eyes, acid smell, like a bomb blast. I am not saying it was a bomb, but I question the gas leak that they told us it was. The Nashville newspaper has an article that even the Gas Company says that it may not have been a gas leak. That more fuels my questioning if it was a bomb or gas leak.
Not being an expert on gas leaks, doesn't gas leaks, after a blast, normally have a fire? And would not the fire be larger as the broken gas lines fed said fire? There was NO fire. Only smoke.
We went out side into the parking lot area. There was a massive first response by fire, police, sheriffs from Nashville. The hotel started bringing out food, drinks, etc. for all the guests, who were in the parking lots. It was quite warm outside with little wind. They opened the Grand Ole Opry building and sent people there where it was air conditioned. The blast was around 8-8:15 p.m. Around midnight the word came to go to the Opry. They told us the hotel was closed, locked and secured while they determined what caused the blast. Many people left for other hotels, went to their cars. We went to the opry. They gave out blankets, food, water, and we were in the Opry until around 3:30 a.m. when the manager came in and announced that they were going to reopen the hotel and we could enter and go to bed. He also announced that no one would be charged a fee for that night (how nice) and when we left, we paid for parking, but they have now debited that back to us today, so no charge for parking after all.
The Association's banquet went off that night without further hitches. They moved the banquet as it was right over where the blast was. The hotel did go overboard to make up what happened to all there.
I am retired military. I know the smell of powder burnt, and the smell of cordite. That is the smell I smelled. There was no hint of natural gas. My brother and sisters were there also and they did not smell natural gas either and we departed the hotel right above the blast area and could see a lot of the damages down below. If there has been any fire, we would not have been allowed to go down that way to get out.
Again, I repeat, I am not saying it was a bomb. But, I KNOW I did not smell gas and I know what burnt powder smells like. That is the smell I smelled.
