One of the most worrying trends in the Index is the coinciding growth in the non-taxpaying public, wrote Heritage authors Bill Beach and Patrick Tyrrell. The percentage of people who do not pay federal income taxes, and who are not claimed as dependents by someone who does pay them, jumped from 14.8 percent in 1984 to 49.5 percent in 2009. That means 151.7 million Americans paid nothing in 2009. By comparison, 34.8 million tax filers paid no taxes in 1984.

I think they're celebrities/ lawmakers but I can't remember the names.

Look for that number to increase as Atlas shrugs.
People who pay no taxes will most likely support anything that gives them something for nothing.
If they get the word that ObamaCareTax is charging them for whatever it gives them...they won't be happy with Barry.
Great argument for repeal of the 16th Amendment and institution of the Fair Tax.
The last nine years of the chart are impressive.
fixed.
What happens to this percentage in the next 10 years when the baby boomers retire, quit their jobs and go on Social Security? Since they will no longer be paying income taxes, are we going to see them go from the “don’t tax me” group to the “whatever, I don’t have to pay that anyway” group.
I don’t mean to disparage the entire group of baby boomers, as I am one.
I am just asking, if we are at about 50% of non income-tax paying Americans, how doe the mass retirement of baby boomers affect this percentage and what does that mean for the future of taxes?
I think that is a valid question.
It’s another incentive to stay on the government dole. Why pay taxes when you get free stuff?
BTW Drudge Heads:
Obama kicks off ‘Betting on America’ tour to paint Romney as outsourcer of jobs...
FLASHBACK: Campaign bus made in Canada...
Heard that McDonald’s has a new McObamacare Burger. You have anything you want on it along with fries and dessert and the guy behind you in line has to pay for it.
If Hussein is permitted to continue his 0bamunist policies, most of the rest of us will be put out of work and then those paying taxes will be even less.
The children of the baby boomers are going to be forced to pay through the nose for the baby boomers. And the grandchildren aren’t finding jobs.
The baby boomers are going to have to take cuts. There will be much whining about how they paid in for so long and aren’t getting their shares.
The baby boomer voters are as much responsible for this as any other group.
Some of us are learning how to speak tagalog or chinese to GTFO of this place.
” how doe the mass retirement of baby boomers affect this percentage and what does that mean for the future of taxes?”
My guess is that a large percentage of taxpayers are on the verge of retirement.
That should work out well...
there are 310m in the US (330m+ if you count the illegals)...
only 140m tax returns are filed yearly
of the 140m, the bottom 50% pay 3% of all taxes... call it zer0.
that means, 70m people, or 21% of the total US population
PAYS .. FOR .. EVERYTHING
...and they want more from us.
of course the title of the article should be:
Chart of the Week: Nearly 80 PERCENT of All Americans Dont Pay Income Taxes
49% don’t pay any taxes...
-
Add to that number:
...Direct employees who rely on federal, state, and local taxes for their livelihood.
...Contract employees who rely on federal, state, and local taxes for their livelihood.
...Recipients of construction and supply contracts who rely on federal, state, and local taxes for their livelihood.
Reducing the size of government has become a minority view.
Nearly half of all Americans enjoy representation without taxation.
Weren’t certain people bitching in the 18th century about the malpractice of taxation without representation?
Anyone who pays property tax, sales tax, state/city income tax isn’t included in this stat (I pay all of them - without a city income tax - as well as federal income tax). My property tax is consistently higher than my federal or state income taxes.
That’s a good point. This trend could show boomers dropping out of paying income tax but still left with paying property taxes.
Eventually we all work for the government without much pay and NO freedom
of any kind,
