Obama's Goose is Cooked
Townhall Finance ^ | July 7, 2912 | Larry Kudlow

Posted on 07/07/2012 6:14:31 AM PDT by no dems

Obama needed a filet mignon in the June employment report. But instead he got a rubber chicken.

Only 80,000 new jobs were created last month, way below Wall Street expectations. It’s the fourth consecutive monthly disappointment. For a few months last winter, jobs were rising at an average of 225,000 a month. But that has sloped way down to only 75,000. The unemployment rate continues at 8.2 percent, which is the forty-first straight month above 8 percent. The U6 unemployment rate, which includes discouraged workers, is just under 15 percent.

As voters finalize their election impressions this summer, all of this is bad news for the Chicago incumbent.

In a campaign stop in Ohio on Friday, Obama actually said we’re still “heading in the right direction.” Is he kidding? As a stagnant GDP drops below 2 percent, employment falters, retail sales decline, and the ISM index for manufacturing drops below 50 (signaling contraction)? No objective observer can deny that the economy is headed in the wrong direction.

I don’t like playing the pessimist, but the numbers are the numbers. This is exactly what former Clinton advisers James Carville, Doug Schoen, and Stanley Greenberg have been warning Obama about. People just don’t believe the economy is getting better. So he’s gotta change his message.

But what change? Taxing rich people won’t create jobs. Neither will bashing Bain Capital. Obama is surrounded by leftist campaign advisers. And it’s hard to see them shifting gears to something constructive like making a summer deal to extend the Bush tax cuts for a year, or heaven forbid backing off the 20-some-odd tax hikes embodied in Obamacare.

In other words, Obama’s goose may already be cooked.

The Joint Economic Committee (JEC), spearheaded by Texas congressman Kevin Brady, put out a report saying that the Obama recovery now ranks dead last in modern times. That’s a real milestone in the post-WWII era. It’s ten out of ten for both jobs and economic growth. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, real GDP has expanded only 6.7 percent over the eleven-quarter recovery since the recession ended. The Reagan recovery at the same stage had increased by 17.6 percent. The Clinton recovery by 8.7 percent.

As for jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the number of private-sector jobs has grown by only 4.1 percent since the cyclical low point. Reagan’s record was 10.7 percent.

So much for Obamanomics. Didn’t work. Still isn’t working. As the JEC put it, spending stimulus, housing bailouts, auto bailouts, financial bailouts, cash for clunkers, cash for caulkers, and $5 trillion in deficit spending left the Obama recovery dead last in modern times.

Whatever happened to the great boom of the ’80s and ’90s, when the animal spirits were strong and the American economy wasn’t held hostage by Europe or China? In an odd twist, both Obama and his top economist Alan Krueger blame “problems built up over decades.” Does that mean they blame Clinton? Reagan?

For nearly 25 years -- during those bad old decades -- the economy increased 3.3 percent annually. Unemployment dropped from 11 percent to 6 percent to 5 percent to below 4 percent. Obama would swoon for numbers like that. But those statistics come from the era when big government was over, when pro-market forces stopped the expansion of Leviathan, and when marginal tax rates were slashed to grow the economy.

Now the question is, with Obama’s economic goose cooked, does Mitt Romney have what it takes to win the election and provide a pro-growth economic model that will restore prosperity at home and America’s number-one position around the world?

Some powerful figures -- including Rupert Murdoch, Jack Welch, and even my brothers and sisters at the Wall Street Journal editorial page -- have taken shots at Romney in recent days. But I am more optimistic. In response to his critics on the day of the bad June jobs report, Romney talked about expanding energy resources, approving the Keystone pipeline, cutting taxes, and increasing trade with Latin America. He reaffirmed his intention to cut federal spending and eliminate programs.

Basically, Romney is promising a return to free-market, supply-side policies on taxes, trade, regulation, and spending. Hopefully he will embrace a sound and stable dollar as well. I still believe Romney is the most underrated politician in America today, and that he’s the most conservative Republican standard bearer since Ronald Reagan.

I think it's actually 40% Liberal and 20% Conservative.

I can't debate the exact numbers but you have to be directionally correct.

So many people have become dependent on the FedGov - it has to be nearing a majority - and certainly 40% could be a low estimate.

I think that if we had had a better conservative candidate this year then that candidate would be the nominee.

Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Santorum, and Gingrich were all poor candidates.

Romney did not really beat them all because there were too many of them and they divided the vote.

Romney beat each of them because none of them were really very good.

If one of them had managed to win the nomination, we’d be sitting here right now running uphill from behind with an unattractive, unpopular candidate who was getting ripped to pieces by the leftists.

God Bless Texas. My kid is stationed there. I like Texas a lot. Feel like I’m in America. Went to a Rangers game too. It was awesome.

I still believe Romney is the most underrated politician in America today, and that he’s the most conservative Republican standard bearer since Ronald Reagan.

I happen to agree with that but it's faint praise considering the Republican standard bearers since Reagan have been George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush and John McCain.

I believe that Mitt Romney is more conservative than those mentioned above. Certainly not even close to Reagan but then, neither was anybody else that came after him. Since Reagan, the GOP has given us nothing but milquetoast lightweights as nominees - and still, we've managed to win 3 of the past 6 presidential elections.

Is Romney being underated on the national scene? I would have to say that he is. Having followed Romney for the past 20 years (I live in New England), he is a very capable man. Unfortunately, his governorship of Massachusetts was a train wreck due in large part to the fact that the state legislature in Massachusetts is over 90% Democrat. Not just Democrat but flat-out moonbat Democrat.

I wonder how effective even Reagan would have been if his presidency had to operate in an environment where the vast majority of the U.S. House and Senate were comprised of left-wing wackjobs.

Only those who have lived in Massachusetts for a period of time can understand just how impossible it is to survive politically as a conservative around here.

Not saying that Romney's going to be on Mt. Rushmore or anything. But if he is elected president and has a Republican controlled Congress to work with, I think he will surprise a few of us.

There is another reason I think a Romney Administration may prove to be a pleasant surprise to many of us: Low expectations. When Obama came into office, the expectations for him were set impossibly high. He was the "Messiah" that was going to fix everything. But it turned out all that "hope and change" crap was just empty slogans and Obama was revealed as an empty suit who hasn't done a damn thing in his life other than run for office. Once handed a real job to do, he was immediately in over his head. Hell, Obama would be in over his head if you put him in charge of a Dairy Queen.

Romney has the exact opposite scenario. He will be coming into the presidency with low expectations. Nobody is expecting very much from Romney. But unlike Obama, Romney has actually done some things in his life. Once in office, he will likely outperform expectations. Of course, he's got to get there first - which is something I'm not taking for granted at this time.

Of course Romney is better than Obama...

There are a number of people on this site who would vehemently disagree with this.

In fact I'm astounded that they aren't all over this thread yet.

She was in her right mind then, but her new Husband is a Retired College Professor of the Uber Liberal persuasion.

Needless to say, she has been indoctrinated, for lack of a better term.

No amount of reason will force them to take the Obama Stickers off their Cars. The only solace I have is that they are living in MS, so their Votes for The One won't matter.

Then again, I live in CA, so my Vote against The One won't matter either.

Broken record is right! ;-)
Press Releases
Broken Record, Broken Promises
Mitt Romney Press | July 6, 2012

Today, the Obama Administration told Americans “not to read too much into” monthly jobs reports.

As it turns out, they’ve been encouraging Americans to do that for years. But after 41 straight months of unemployment over 8%, you don’t have to read between the lines to see the truth. President Obama’s policies have failed to get America working again.

June 2012: “Therefore, it is important not to read too much into any one monthly report and it is informative to consider each report in the context of other data that are becoming available.” (LINK: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/07/06/employment-situation-june)

Democrats and Republicans hate conservatives and Tea Party. They do not want individual rights they want the power of the government and the fortunes of taxes.

Some Republicans are conservatives and tea partiers and want to restore individual rights.

There is no legal way obama will win re-election. We all know it.

Almost any ABO candidate will enjoy a landslide victory in November.

Romney, however, has shown he will embrace the GOPe's usual RINO Progressive Defense strategy to either lose an easy win or to make a win feel like a loss.

The GOP makes me feel like a red headed step child at a family reunion. I don't belong and they are only nice to me at these phony reunions.

The proof is in the pudding.

Obama being Elected by a Six Million Vote Majority tells me that people might say they are Conservative to a person on the phone, but they Vote to reward themselves with other people's money.

That ain't Conservative my FRiend. The Pollster should explain what the terms “Conservative” and “Liberal” mean before asking the question. The results would change.

I have come to the conclusion that that was by design. It was almost a repeat of 2008. Get several 'conservative' candidates to run and split the vote so the preferred GOPe candidate gets the nomination.

McCain, even after he sewed up the nomination, seldom got more than 70% of the primary vote. Romney didn't do much better.

Still, 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 'conservative' candidates did more mucking up than putting forth a viable alternative. Even toward the end, when it was obvious Gingrich couldn't win with Santorum in the race and Santorum couldn't win with Gingrich in the race, both held on until Romney won by default.

He didn't win with ideology.

He was sold to consumers like when a new product hits the market against a tired market standard.

He won by being new and different, by being well financed and organized, by keeping his real identity vague and unknown, wearing instead the identity disguise created previously in his "auto"biographies, and finally by using language and media support that makes you believe his disguise.

He won by being a reasonable, good liar who happens to be "...the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,"

"I mean, that's a storybook, man."

Well, when you stop and think about it, the Republican standard bearers since Reagan have been:

George H.W. Bush
Bob Dole
George W. Bush
John McCain

So I can believe that Romney is more conservative than those four. Maybe not much more though.

We'll see.
