John Boehner: Voters Need Not Love Mitt Romney
Roll Call ^ | 7/7/12 | Jonathan Strong

-snip-

The Ohio Republican made the remarks when an unidentified woman asked during a question-and-answer session: “Can you make me love Mitt Romney?”

“No,” Boehner said. “Listen, we’re just politicians. I wasn’t elected to play God. The American people probably aren’t going to fall in love with Mitt Romney. I’ll tell you this: 95 percent of the people that show up to vote in November are going to show up in that voting booth, and they are going to vote for or against Barack Obama. “Mitt Romney has some friends, relatives and fellow Mormons ... some people that are going to vote for him.

But that’s not what this election is about. This election is going to be a referendum on the president’s failed economic policies.

Yes it is, considering the golden chances which were laid at our feet.

I’m praying for a Romney win and that he turns out to be better than he currently appears. I know what I get with the other guy who will only be worse in a second term than in his first. Conservative victories in the House and Senate might be able to pull Romney right. There is no hope for the other one.

No kidding. Shoot me, but this seems like McCain all over again. No fight in the RNC or in the candidate. The question is, why? Are they resigned to losing? Or, are they just this inept that, again, they think being nice, and docile, and uncontroversial, is a strategy? Or, are they simply bought-off, and like the idea of Obama winning again? A combination of the above? I don’t know.

Keep in mind, these are the same people that think Sarah Palin is too "polarizing" to win an election.

I don’t know if Palin would have been a great president, but there is no way in Hell she would be as bad as this empty suit. I won’t even give him credit for Fast and Furious. I honestly don’t think he’s that smart. I think F&F is the product of whoever is pulling his strings, and he carries out orders. He’ no more than a robot.

This is exactly like the last campaign.

Anti Incumbency / anti vote.

How well did that work last time? What's that AE saying about doing the same thing over and over?

Myth is flopping as hard as he can, but he'll probably win anyway. Do you really expect him to do any better than his dark clone?

Well I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m just totally frustrated. I actually have liberal friends that agree that Obama needs to go. They hate the way he has handled both health care and the economy. The problem lies with Romney. His track record of Romney care is indefensible. His flip flops are real and make him untrustworthy. I’m really not a black helicopter sort of person, but this feels like a government plot that we are unequipped to fight.

A “good campaigner” is not necessarily a good business man or a good manager.

We have seen over the past 3-1/2 years what a cockup a “good campaigner can make of things.

Romney is definitely not my first, or second choice, and he’s sure not Mr. Charisma. But I think he has the business sense and common sense to start making things right again in this country. I pray we can get him elected or we are up the creek for sure.

No fight in the RNC or in the candidate. The question is, why?

I'm the last person on earth you would find defending the RNC, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you don't beat a dead horse!

Obama has economically destroyed things over the past 4 years and the American people know it. People recognize Obama is a dangerous anti-Capitalist, anti-American, radical socialist loser!

Mitt just has to show up and not piss off the base to badly and it's a lock!

Just being an American will beat Obama!

For all Romney's faults - and they've been posted on these threads hundreds of times by now - Speaker Boehner is right.

The election is a referendum on the Obama presidency, not on the popularity of Mitt Romney, who doesn't excite many but at least looks presidential. On that basis, Romney probably will win as Obama's approval numbers are tanking, as they should. Romney may be far less than we want but unless he can somehow be replaced as the 2012 Republican presidential nominee - which is extremely unlikely - he is all we've got to remove Obama from power. A thin reed, for sure, but as America declines by the day, a better alternative than Obama. Those who simply cannot in good conscience vote for Romney will do what they must but when presented with the possibility of another four years of Obama and Mitt Romney, well, I find it hard to do anything in the voting booth that, in effect, helps Obama be re-elected by default and by doing so, seriously endanger the survival of America as we know and love it. Cynicism is easy today but accomplishes nothing worthwhile.

I want us to control the senate and the house. I’m not even interested in the presidential race. There is no lesser of two evils this time.
