More suburban Jews turning to the Republican Party
Daily Herald ^ | 7/8/12 | Kerry Lester

Standing at a Skokie Holiday Inn before a table full of “Obama! Oy Vey!” buttons, Anita Ashe and Ellen Warsaw had a strikingly similar story to tell. The women, both Skokie residents, were born and raised in an environment where voting Democratic was as natural for their families as the Friday Shabbat dinners that were a regular part of their Jewish faith. Despite that political history, Ashe in recent years has found herself attending events sponsored by he Chicago Chapter of the Republican Jewish Coalition after becoming “more and more conservative as I read more and get perspectives on the issue.”

I don’t really know for sure. I had a girl-friend sometime back that sort of explained it to me. It has to do with being socially acceptable. Not only to family, other Jews but also at work.

They ‘must’ fit in wherever they are at. It’s a sort of camouflage that makes them feel if not invisible then at least a part of the background. And that in turn makes them feel ‘safe’.

There is an active branch of the RJC in Wisconsin, as well.

Sorry. They may, in a fit of pique, register Republican. However, whenever thay enter the voting booth they will start to shake, foam at the mouth, fall writhing to the ground, then rise and in a state of automatic writing vote Democrat. They cannot help it, it is their nature, their essence, their very being. Jews are the first people genetically programmed as Democrats-averitable wonder!

It doesn’t make sense, but I can explain it. First of all, many, many, many Jews came here from Russia at the end of the 19th c. fleeing the Czar and pogroms. So when the Bolsheviks came to power, they thought that was good, because the Bolsheviks did away with their enemy, the Czar. Then, Jews found that even when they worked hard, earned money, and achieved academically, they were denied entry to universities (this was up to the 1950s) and denied entry to hotels, clubs, and even kept from purchasing homes in states like CN. They perceived that the people blocking them everywhere were the WASP establishment, aka Republicans. Added to this, many Jews were barely observant, but because of the animus against their ethnicity, they developed anti-Christian feelings. I know that my father, who was Irish C. was ridiculed for being a Jew when he served in the military during WWII - because he was educated and was always reading

Because they don’t take Torah seriously either.

Apparently, some American Jews are finally abandoning the herd mentality and actually thinking about who and what they are voting for instead of reflexively voting for the candidate with 'D' after their name. This is encouraging but may not make a big difference in this election. We'll see if the trend catches on or is a one-time fluke tied to Obama's anti-Israel stance.

Now, if only this also applied to black voters and their herd mentality when it comes to voting party instead of person or, in Obama's case, voting color and party over rational thought and realizing that your 'brother' Obama is laughing at your slavish devotion to his skin color and doesn't give a flip about you.

I’ve heard they vote dem because Eisenhower belonged to the country club, which at that time tended to exclude jews from joining.

Still hard to believe this is happening in Skokie.

Added to this, many Jews were barely observant, but because of the animus against their ethnicity, they developed anti-Christian feelings.

Excellent explanation kabumpo your entire post should be a Icon on FR as a primer...

Tangent to this, 2 things Conservatives should never due around Reform Jews, at least the ones I know ( I am close to the community here...) and more...

1.) Do not try to convert them to Christianity, it pisses them off royal, and maybe the Nexus-Lexus of why they stay away from the Republican Party, because so many Christian Conservatives try to hammer both points home. Let them practice their faith, if you can reach them at an epistemological level politically, be happy with that victory.
2.) Do not say yes I have Jewish friends, that are members of Jews for Jesus, Oh, that is a real sore subject.
3.) The Reform Jews I am close to are family orientated, busy, and still are getting their media from the lame streams and will not go to Fox or "Glenn". You could discuss what Glenn says about Anti-Semetism in Europe and like I did, and they were shocked they did not know about it. The bigger surprise was when I told them "Glenn" is the only one taking about it. It may take a book from Levin, Prager, or Horowitz to get the conversation going.
3a.) Many of my Reform friends still listen to NPR, and read the NYT's. Very educated, but do not know the following authors: Ayn Rand, Fredrick Hayek, etc. etc. Loan them your books in that arena our "classics" if you will....
4.) Subject matters we believe in Lower Taxes and Gun rights have tidbits that will give any person cause to challenge their core beliefs. Denoting firearm ownership for Seniors and the less than mobile adults as an equalizer for thugs got the attention of a Reform Jew I spoke too, because it made sense. Ditto that a conversation about the Flat-Tax S. Forbes Ideas when someone was going through estate-tax-hell. "Our" ideas are not reaching many Americans where it effects their lives, Reform Jews as well. The Conservative movement has the trouble of contextualizing our ideas into little gems like my example.

As a rap up, if you want to make inroads with Jews you know to at least consider pulling the lever of "O" please do not got there for items 1 or 2......

Few and fewer all the time. My family (Jewish all) is an example. In the past it was 5-2 democrat advantage. Now it is 6-1 republican (and the last holdout is wavering). For the record, I have never voted democrat in my life.

I wonder the same thing about Asians. They come here, they're successful, and yet they vote Democrat. The only reason a businessperson would vote Democrat (IMHO) is for protection. Protection from the Democrats.

First of all, I'm glad some Jewish voters are beginning to think for themselves. But secondarily, I worry about the Republican party getting swamped with "social moderates."

What is there that's Jewish about "social moderation?" Is the Torah "socially moderate" on homosexuality? Is Halakhah "socially moderate" on abortion on demand? The big secret is that Judaism is actually more like islam than chr*stianity (especially American chr*tianity). It is a "totalistic" Theocratic religion that regulates all of life. How can one belong to such a religion and then be afraid of "theocracy?" It is a Theocracy!!!

One difference between totalistic Judaism and totalistic islam is that Judaism does not aspire to convert the entire human race to Judaism, but to the Noachide Laws. Another is that, unlike islam (a universal religion) Judaism is the religion of a nation in exile, at present without the fullness of the Torah polity. And that polity in its fullness does include things like capital punishment for certain sins (provided all requirements are met) and animal sacrifices. This is not a "modern," new age religion. And I wish chr*stians whose hearts are allegedly bleeding with love for the Jewish People (and for the Bible they claim to love so much) would think a moment or two before screaming about how only savages would ever execute someone for adultery by stoning him/her to death. Oh really?

No, Jews in the present exile are not going to embark on a program of forcing all non-Jews to convert to Judaism (or to Noachism), but chr*stians who object to total religion are just as much of a mystery to me as Jews who are afraid of "theocracy."

Why can't Jewish Republicans bring their total Torah philosophy with them? That's the question.

Either you are teasing us or there must be a mutated gene in your lineage. If the latter then breed like mad!

As I stated to Blennos, if it is true that there are conservative Jews running around; then there must be a mutant gene floating about.
