Thanks for that correction on Hayek's religious identification. I thought he was Jewish because he immigrated to the US during the Nazi era.

Now please educate me on this: Who was Ludwig Wittengenstein?

A number of Jewish immigrants from Russia are trending Republican because the ‘Rats under Obama are reminding them of what they left behind.

You're correct. That would include relatively recent Jewish immigrants (since c. 1980) and their descendants from other erstwhile Soviet republics as well. That population in the US is believed to account for perhaps 200,000+ people, mostly in and around NYC and in southern California. They definitely voted strongly for McCain against Obama in 2008, so that trend toward the GOP started even before the Obama regime.

Unfortunately, since they are mostly in deep blue states, they don't have much of an impact on presidential politics. However, as rmlew has pointed out here, they can have a definitive impact in local politics, helping to elect Bob Turner (R) in the special NYC congressional election last and one of their own, a Republican, to a NY State Senate seat.

There are more conservative Jews than you would think.

Don't go all giddy on us, B. If the Republicans get a measly 15% of the "Jewish Vote," it's enough. And I'm buying!

If you want to win Florida in the presidential race, you'd better get more than 15% of the Jewish vote there for sure.

Come November, the prediction here is that Romney gets about 40% of the Jewish vote nationally, roughly the same as Reagan in 1980. It's not that Romney is the new Reagan, far from it. It's that Obama is worse than Carter, even more destructive to Jewish interests than Carter was, both at home and abroad.

Don't get me started on Florida!

If there aren't 250,000 + illegal "double-dip" voters in Florida, I'll buy however many there are a goddam mojito. The state is full of jerks who vote in two states ... back "home" in Michigan or New Jersey, or Brooklyn, by absentee, and in Florida at the polls, or vice versa. Of course, all of these heinous "double-dippers" aren't Jewish ... just enough to fit the argument!

That's on top of the illegal non-citizen "Motor Voters" from god knows where. Instead of hanging chads in Florida, they ought to hang a few illegal voters. Whatever the count in Florida, 20% of Democrat ballots ... at least ... ought to be automatically thrown out

BTW, Wittgenstein was the guy who figured out that "Philosophy" was pretty much a waste of time because if humans didn't make certain basic assumptions to begin with, we could never talk about anything. Of course, a lot of other philosophers had figured that out, too. But Old Ludwig was the first university-paid guy to have the cojones to say so in print from Cambridge University.

Too bad he's dead. We could use him today.

Glad to make the correction, Hayek actually came to the US from the U.K., where he had moved from Austria in 1931.

Actually, I have to correct myself. Hayek was Wittengenstein's second cousin. Ludwig Wittengenstein was an analytic philosopher whose name is almost synonymous with genius in certain circles. His specialty was relating propositions to things in the outside world, and his work has been very influential.

You should read the Wikipedia article on him. He's a real odd bird: his dad was one of the wealthiest men in Austria, but Ludwig gave away his entire inheritance to his siblings after a nervous breakdown. Three of his brothers committed suicide. Unusually for an academic, he signed up to serve (for Austria-Hungary) and was decorated for bravery numerous times. He was actually in the same high school as Adolf Hitler - and wound up serving as a humble hospital attendant in World War 2 for the Allies in the U.K. A really unusual character, he was.

Maybe he was - but in World War 1, he came close to being awarded Austria-Hungary's answer to the Medal of Honor.

You have a good point when you say that FL is one of the larger offenders when it comes to voter fraud and that "snowbirds" and non-citizens, as well as motor voter are important parts of the problem. That's probably why Michelle Obama gave her "multiply the vote" speech in Florida the other day.

The GOP state administration seems to be working on a project to try to purge voter registration lists of illegals, and, as you may know, recently won a federal court decision against the Holder Injustice Dept. to clear the way, at least for now.

Perhaps, if the GOP gains the White House next year along with majorities in both houses of Congress, Motor Voter can be put on the REPEAL NOW list right behind Obamacare.

As for double voting by "snowbirds," it requires the voter registration lists in other states in order to deal with. You're right that law enforcement has to come up with new priorities to prosecute those cheats who participate in it.

“multiply the vote”? She actually said that in public? Juan Domingo Peron, thou shouldst be living in Florida in this day!
Quick! Find a little Cuban kid floating in an inner tube and have the feds grab him from his uncle under force of arms. We need every PO’d Cuban voter we can get! The fate of the free world is at stake./not sarc

You’re correct this isn’t a Jewish issue, but there’s no way to throw out the local votes, the absentees could be held and crosschecked, maybe. And only after local voting is complete. Impractical. Since both states have records of the voters, the only solution is interstate cooperation and prosecution. I believe we’re talking a felony here, and I’d be OK with probation and a fine for those who plead. Let them live with the felony conviction.

As a Jewish conservative descended from earlier immigrants, I echo your thoughts. I had known about Soviet repression of their Jewish population in particular since the 1960s, and have met a few of the recent Soviet Jewish immigrants to the US.

In general, though, there is limited social interaction between the recently arrived Soviet Jews and their descendants and the more assimilated and established Jews descended from earlier generations of immigrants. It's just that the newer Soviet immigrants still maintain their different cultural ways, so opportunities for the more established left-leaning Jews to learn from them are limited.

That’s too bad.

But maybe you could reach some of them a bit by writing a letter to the editor to secular or Jewish newspapers?

The Torah lists few sins as an abomination (toevah). Included in that short list is male homosexual acts.

So yes, I agree. They don’t take Torah seriously.

In addition the entire issue of gay marriage is silly and foisted upon us by a minute segment of the population. There are so many larger groups who deserve our attention and care for their status.
