Atheist group rebukes Obama over prayer for Batman shooting victims
Washington Examiner ^ | 7/20/2012 | Joel Gehrke

“May the Lord bring them comfort and healing in hard days to come,” President Obama said at the end of his speech today, referring to the victims of the Batman shooting in Colorado and their families. By doing so, he “ben[t] the rules” against government establishing a religion, according to the Center for Secular Humanism.

“I think it’s a little unfortunate,” CSH director Tom Flynn told The Washington Examiner. “Even in a situation like this, [when] he leads a public prayer to a deity that it pretty recognizably the Christian God, much as you can understand the emotional context of it, he’s still sending to some degree a message of exclusion to other religions who don’t call their god “Lord” and to non-religious Americans.”

“By the very act of praying, that’s a message of exclusion,” he continued. “If I’m a public official, I think I’m going to look around in the morning and conclude that, ‘hey, this religion thing is just too hot to handle, I should stay away from it in my official capacity.’”

Flynn was sympathetic to the president’s position, though. “I can understand the extraordinary nature of this situation in Colorado and why President Obama might have felt really moved to bend the rules this time, but you really can’t.”

Yesterday, Flynn rebuked Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for saying that he was “praying for rain” at a White House event. “For a Cabinet official to recommend prayer as a solution or call attention to his own devotions may violate the Constitution’s prohibition against establishment of religion,” he said in a statement.

I can’t stand Obama. but this is just plain horseshiite. The man was doing what Presidents are supposed to do when things like this happen. These morons would be better seved by going after the President for his numerous other failings. There is a special place reserved in hell for these clowms.

The Secular Humanists should merge with the Westboro Baptist Church. They have a lot in common, including the determination to be total assholes while everyone else is in mourning.

Atheists need not worry. It was not a real prayer. It was a PINO (prayer in name only).

They shouldn’t worry too much - never happened before, won’t happen again. I bet the words choked out of his throat like an old sock.

Uh, how should I pray for these atheists who believe in “No God”?

May “No God” have mercy on them?

Wonder if I worded that correctly according to their beliefs?

Blessings, Bobo

My feeling is that these individuals are not true Atheists but are Anti-theists because a true Atheist could not care less about a god they feel does not exist. Anti-theists know God does exist and they are against him.

This post is somewhat a contraction in terms, because I believe giving these atheists any kind of forum or even permitting their story to be published gives them legitimacy and they deserve nothing whatsoever!

Of course one should expect a group of soulless heathens to fail to understand or appreciate a gesture of compassion of any kind. Atheists tend to be perpetually pissed off about something 24/7. I say let it continue.. it gives them a sense of purpose.

My question exactly.. if their comfortable in their non-belief in God, what`s with the insecurity when others DO pray?

Sounds more to me like, just as with other pressure groups, the godless are simply looking for ways to complicate the lives of everyone else.

I kept looking and looking for the semi news-semi satire line but I couldn’t find it. If this is for real the person quoted needs a big swift kick to the butt.

It's freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. You don't have to agree with it or participate in it, but as American citizens we tolerate the legitimate rights of others.
